Atlantic current - climate crisis deflection

Sapphireandsteel2 · 23/04/2026 12:32

Why does this not receive more coverage? Do billionaires run our political system so much that governments don't get together to discuss this impending Atlantic Current crisis? it is now nighly likely to breakdown and plunge us into freezing winters with sea ice and little ability to grow crops.

A catastrophic climate event is upon us. Here is why you’ve heard so little about it | George Monbiot

Scientists say a crucial Atlantic system is set to collapse. But the billionaire death cult that steers humanity’s destiny just doesn’t do existential crises, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

There probably isn't anything we can do to stop it if it happens and that is a very big IF given the endless alarmist reports over the years that never came true.

CoverIt · 23/04/2026 12:46

It’s been a while since I’d heard anything about this - was seeing documentaries on this 20+ years ago.

Those with the power to make any difference won’t because they can’t think further than winning the next election or next year’s profits. I wish it was like films where the whole planet unites to avert the huge crisis heading our way but sadly it’s not.

SharpTooth · 23/04/2026 12:48

Quite honestly, what’s the point? It’ll just be another thing to worry about. Just add it to the list of things that we are meant to be panicking about. Wars. Cost of living. Pensions/benefits system collapsing. AI taking over all jobs. Climate change. Anything else I’ve missed?

Ablondiebutagoody · 23/04/2026 12:51

It's just a bullshit theory churned out by some computer model, likely based on assumptions by scientists who's funding depends on there being a climate "emergency".

JoshLymanSwagger · 23/04/2026 12:51

Yeah, heard about that at least 20yrs ago.

Unless it's stopping a billionaire from becoming even more wealthy, nothing will be done.

Nobody in power, with wealthy backers cares.

The problem with climate change theory is that the earth has been subject to massive climate shifts in it's history and is known to periodically warm and cool.

Things like the atlantic currant (and the jet stream and others) may seem to be "permanent" but they are not, and have not always been there nor will always be there.

Even as recently as the 1600's the earth had significant cooling. But we only have temperature records for the last 150 years or so.

Nothing we are seeing now is outside of that.

icouldholditwithacobweb · 23/04/2026 13:19

It's almost inevitable that at some point it will happen, and there's probably nothing we can do to stop it - it would require all world governments, corporations, wealth-holders etc to work together to effect any kind of change at this point, and nobody is willing to do it because it would cost too much and people wouldn't be willing or able to make the necessary lifestyle sacrifices without being under extreme duress.

However: there's also many more things that could go wrong and end the world as we know it, and probably we're not privy to a lot of it. After reading 'Ten Billion' by Stephen Emmott, it seems like humanity is pretty fucked one way or another and I'm just not going to worry about which way it comes about.

So is global warming not a thing anymore then? Whatever happened the Ozone layer crisis? Did that just go away too? Sorry but bore off with this nonsense, every decade brings a new climate scare, I’m 56 now and this is a rinse repeat thing, plus ca change etc Modern day version of “the end of the world is nigh” apocalyptic preachers.

Swiftie1878 · 23/04/2026 13:36

If it happens, there’s little that can be done about it, so why worry everyone?
One day we’re all going to fry as temperatures are getting higher, now we’re supposed to worry about freezing to death.
Yawn. Too much real stuff (that we CAN do something to change) to worry about.

Global warming is an imprecise description of the climate crisis, but they are the same phenomenon, and the ozone layer hole is closing thanks to a huge regulatory and societal effort. Glad you're able to be bored at 56, those of us a bit younger who will be more likely to see what's coming within our lifetimes are often less bored with the catastrophe ahead.

OP, I read that article, and then I thought about the world my tiny children are going to be living in, and then I couldn't think much longer. It's awful, and there's nothing we can do. The system will just keep grinding on until it's forced to stop because we're all dead.

chubley · 23/04/2026 14:52

It’s one of those things like others that could happen soon or not for hundreds or thousands of years. Climate change has been happening as long as weather has existed. Just because scientists discovered this 20+years ago and hasn’t happened (yet) doesn’t mean the possibility has gone away. We should be aware but not worry about it day to day.

IAxolotlQuestions · 23/04/2026 17:09

The apocalyptic outcomes they allude to are highly unlikely. The collapse of the current (which has occurred before and will again) is not, but without a timescale it’s not something I will worry about. I could be dead by then.

If it does happen in my lifetime, I’ll have to buy and heat greenhouses. It’ll make us colder, but it won’t end either the human race or life on the planet.

comeondover · 23/04/2026 17:58

Denial, despair, ignorance, misinformation. Most likely other factors too. I think we have, in the main, been so lucky for so long that things like food insecurity, more flooding and our own displacement are beyond imagination.

@Sapphireandsteel2 You might be interested in the National Emergency Briefing screenings, which are happening all over the UK. Firstly because there'll be others there asking the same questions as you, and secondly because one of the explicit aims is that the government 'should launch a science-led national emergency response to the climate and nature breakdown showing the same leadership and determination as WW2'. Local MPs are attending some of the screenings.

National Emergency Briefing

Find a People's Emergency Briefing screening near you, or spot a gap that you can fill by hosting a screening.

The Ozone Layer was a big issue because

  1. It caused cancer and
  2. The CFC's that were causing the breakdown were a mature non patented technology so......

Nobody was making a lot of money out of them and there were a lot of patentable business opportunities from phasing out CFC's
