To think I’ll be stuck at 16 stone forever

I’m in the process of losing weight and since the start of the year I’ve lost about 13lbs.

But I seem to be in a loop. I’ll hit 16 stone 0.3 on the scales and then go back up to 16 stone 4, then go back down, then back up. It’s like an annoying cycle.

I eat well:

breakfast - yoghurt with berries and sometimes a drizzle of honey. On low protein days I’ll add some skyr.

lunch - something from home. Usually soup, a salad or a bit of meat with some veg.

dinner - again something prepped. Can be another big salad, cottage pie, pasta bake.

I eat 1550 calories a day, which is a deficit for my height and weight. I go to the gym twice a week (under the direction of a PT, to lift weights), try to run 3 times a week but I’m waiting on some new running shoes, and the other two days a week I’ll walk 10k steps minimum. I try to drink 4 litres of water a day at least.

my clothes fit better but the scale just won’t change 😥 do I just accept I’m stuck here?

Yep. A good amount of the overweight will be water being used to store the salt. Not all but a good amount. Addressing this issue could assist on her weight loss journey. Dieters often avoid sugary foods and lean in on salty snacks. So they lose fat but gain water at the same time. This can feel really disheartening. Especially of you are unaware of the role of excess salt in the diet.

I've heard some unscientific stuff on this thread but this takes the sugar and salt free biscuit.

I do wish some of you would stop with the condescending comments and actually read what I’ve said.

I also get about 4g of sodium a day so I don’t think it’d that!

Good to hear the different reasonings on daily v weekly weigh-ins. I go for the same time/day each week - Friday morning so I’ve had as long as possible to get rid of any bloating from my Saturday ‘treat day’ 😂

I love that! Someone at my work does every Saturday morning so they know they’ll have got rid of last Saturday’s treats 😂 I don’t bother weighing if I’ve not gone to the toilet because it feels unrepresentative. I’m tempted to do one of those social media colon cleanses you see just to see what I’m storing

Sounds like this isn’t an issue for you then. It made a massive difference for me.

15 stone 9.1 this morning!!!! I think I can say it’s well and truly broken now.

Well done!

All that was needed was a bit of judgement and being called a liar on MN!

I am thrilled for you.

I broke the 90kg barrier briefly yesterday. I was 89.5kg.

Back to 90.4kg today. I've been going up and down between around 90kg to around 91.6kg for... ever.

And ever.

It was nice of the scales to tease me. Good of my water and hormones to align briefly. Seeing an 8 was novel.

Onwards... and downwards for you!

Back up today, but I’m due on in 5 days 🥲

I personally just work with „new lows“.
If I get to a new low within 2-3 weeks (and my average goes down) I‘m happy. Even though I know that my weight will bounce back a little afterwards…

I have actually had to learn that my body will bounce back a little after every new low and take time to stabilise.

so:

new low, bounce, stabilise (with some light variations), new low, bounce up again, stabilise etc…

Mrscaptainraymondholt · 28/04/2026 13:16

except sometimes other things are hindering this process, for example hypothyroidism or bile acid malabsorption syndrome, both of which can make your body hold on to everything!

This is a good approach.

I work in a quality related role and we use SPC (google it) to detect changes in manufacturing conditions. It’s equally applicable to weight loss except that you are looking for downwards change rather than stability. So a chart of daily weights might show a zig zag shape around a downward trend.
