AIBU to leave the house unlocked when my husband is out late?

AIBU to go to bed and leave the house unlocked?

I always do this when DH is out late, figure the dog will bark if anyone enters but my friend is horrified!

Doesn't he have his own key?

Wowzel · Yesterday 22:51

I wouldn't do this, that's mad.

Why can't he use a key and open the door?

JWhipple · Yesterday 22:52

I'm sure your insurance will cover you if anything gets stolen 🙄

How old is your husband? Is he old enough to have his own house key? Maybe you could sit down with him and explain how keys work.

Pistachiocake · Yesterday 22:54

Depends where you live etc. But I would guess that if someone is going to break in despite a (big?) dog, then they wouldn't let a locked door stop them. Now if you didn't have a dog, then no.

ToKittyornottoKitty · Yesterday 22:54

What’s the advantage to leaving it unlocked? You word it like you lock it when DH is home… and therefore the home maybe safer as 2 adults rather than 1, but when potentially more vulnerable you make a point of leaving it unlocked. Why?

Ponderingwindow · Yesterday 22:55

I don’t leave the house unlocked in the middle of the day. People have keys and use them. Why take the risk.

I mean, there’s one in the keystore thing but no he won’t carry one as we always do this!

Why’s he too special to carry a key?

He’d do the same if I were out. I don’t think anyone would enter, the dog would bark and scare them off?

I would never leave my house unlocked. It leaves you so vulnerable.

MasterBeth · Yesterday 22:58

Why bother having a lock on the door at all?

How big is this dog? Are you not worried someone could harm or steal your dog? These things do happen

Only lock it if both of us are in bed and both our (adult) kids are home too so it’s open lots to be fair. The dog is really noisy if anyone comes to the door!!

He’s not special, just knows he doesn’t need it I guess.

So if you both go out without keys, who ever locks the door. It’s chicken and egg. Is your house permanently open?
how lazy do you have to be to not use the key safe

lazyarse123 · Yesterday 23:01

Can he not get it out of the key safe?

DiscoBeat · Yesterday 23:01

I wouldn't do that at night (it's unlocked all day). DH or I take a key if we're out late.

No because if anybody entered the house, the dog would bark so loudly I’d be up anyway.

Unlocked as in anyone could just walk in or just not locked?

That would not stop someone from harming or taking the dog? They wouldn’t freeze until you appeared

MissMoneyFairy · Yesterday 23:03

Why don't you all just use your own keys. Your insurance won't pay out if youre burgled. What's the benefit of ever leaving it unlocked.

PacificState · Yesterday 23:03

Our front door cannot be opened at all without a key so I’m really confused. Even Yale locks have latches don’t they? Is your door just flapping open?

No obviously if one of us goes out and then the other one goes, the last one out would lock the door.

OP posts:
Shinyandnew1 · Yesterday 23:04

Our front door locks when you close it so you can’t get in from the outside without a key, so each of us has a key and takes it with when we are out. I wouldn’t want an unlocked house, no.

PropertyD · Yesterday 23:04

Quite honestly anyone breaking in at night will either have a Mars Bar to throw to the dog or worse aggressively disarm the barking. I won’t say what a burglar did to my Mums neighbour’s dog but the dog was never the same again.

Please don’t do this.
