To think there’s nothing wrong with this iPhone?

I’m hoping some MN’rs more technically minded than me will be able to help.

I am in the market for a new phone, and have identified the iPhone 17e as the front runner.

Two separate people have pointed out to me that this isn’t the ‘proper/full’ iPhone 17 and is cheaper than the main model for a reason.

I can’t see anything obviously wrong with it. Has anyone had the ‘e’ mode before and is able to recommend?

I am a techie, and I'm currently still using my iphone 12 mini. I use it for my work - including accessing servers and using AI, for my exercise (with my apple watch - the SE ie. cheap one), for all my communications and watching TV.

Unless there's something you're planning to do that needs the latest and greatest chip (advanced photography? AI on handset?) there is absolutely nothing wrong with the 17e.

My only advice is that if you skimp on memory you will regret it. Every time I've done that I've been kicking myself within a year. For this 12 mini I maxed it out, and haven't had to delete anything in 5 years.

Stick with the e, and get it with the largest memory possible - I have 256GB on my mini, just over half used, and I'm a hoarder.

I loved my iPhone 12 mini. Unfortunately I destroyed it with a bottle of micellar water spilling in my bag. 😩

I had to buy a 17e as that was all I could buy immediately as I was boarding a plane.

I’m pretty happy with it apart from the size. It’s so heavy compared to my iPhone 12 mini.

there’s nothing wrong with the 17e OP. Ignore them.

Hard agree on the size - it's one of the reasons I'm digging my feet in on upgrading - I don't want a massive phone again.

What I really want is a folding iphone - so big screen, but small unit for my pocket ... but.. I'm actually also considering getting an ipad mini with sim and just using that headphones on, leave it in my bag most of the time if the fold doesn't appear in the next year or two (or I accidentally destroy my 12 like you did 😫)

Having had my iphone 13 die completely yesterday, I've just had to grudgingly upgrade - the only difference between the 17 and the 17e, according to the apple store tech, is the camera isn't quite as fancy and the processing speed isn't so fast.

Thanks. Which did you go for? x

Thanks for all the reviews, I’m fed up with charging mine 3-4 times a day (12 mini) I really want another mini but not currently making them

That's like people comparing top end cars, but buying a lada.

if all you want is 4 wheels, fine, but if you want performance & style it's not fine.

also compatibility with other devices.

No, it really isn't. That's what Apple want you to believe but it isn't actually true at all.

Those are all the reasons I would choose an Android 😂

Just get a new battery in your 13, it’ll last a couple more years, lol

I worked for one of the networks for 30yrs, if you don’t use the majority of features, there’s no need to upgrade. I still have my iPhone 10 😆

Is it safe to keep using for online banking though? If that’s what you do of course, I worry mine isn’t going to be safe soon as it will stop doing security updates I believe, I have an iPhone 11.

Is a folding phone in the plans from Apple? I too would love one of them! I only recently changed from 8 to 14. The 8 was brilliant but it just went kaput after many years true and loyal service. I cannot believe how bloody heavy the 14 is, but the battery life is excellent one year on.

Now a folding phone would really tempt me...... 😊

My iPhone is compatible with my iPad & my Apple Watch an android wouldn't be.

I have an iPhone 8 and it does everything I want.

Not if you want new apps! I’ve just replaced my disaster of an 8!

Exactly that. I’m locked into Apple now, the disruption of moving away from it doesn’t bear thinking about.

Better to get an older (15 or 16) model Pro version than the new (17) E.

NooNakedJacuzziness · Today 10:02

I love my iPhone 8 - battery is fine, might have to upgrade if I find it doesn’t load new Apps but no problems so far.

Does it do security updates?

I had my old iPhone for 6 years and I’ve just changed it now and bought a refurbished IPhone 14 Plus for £280 because the old one stopped updating and I need my phone to always be updated for work purposes. I hope this new one lasts for years but I like it already and it’s 64gb

Same same! Just got a refurbished iPhone 14. Been using a second hand 12 and before that a 10 so the 14 feels shiny by comparison!

Unless you are seriously into photography or graphics I don’t think the top / latest models get you much. And they do seem to lose battery faster.

Does it do security updates?

Looks like March 2026 was the last security update for the iPhone 8, so won’t have the latest April ones according to this article:

Damnit, I only gave up my iPhone 4 under duress!

Spareincoming · Today 11:23

I had this same issue a few months ago and went for the iPhone 16 over the 17e as I wanted the wide lens camera but not the size of the 17.
The 16 and 17e are about the same size but the wide lens lets me show DP how far the sheep are spread across the hillside… niche use I know but since having it on my 13 I can’t go back!

Apparently Apple do refurbished too now which I must remember in future!

Waterrush · Today 12:08

The main thing for me is battery life. All phones do more than I need them to do tbh. I'm sure it will be more than fine.

Swiftie1878 · Today 13:17

Wertui · Today 12:05

Power and storage. The E will become very frustrating very quickly, and the 17 isn’t significantly better than the two earlier models, but the earlier ones will be significantly cheaper!
