My DD is 6, perfectly normal weight. Her and her friend were talking and said they want to get thinner like their other friend and talking about what kilograms they weigh? Not sure where this is coming from. We have Alexa and they randomly starting asking her ’’how to get thinner’’ and ‘’will eating fruit make us thinner’’

Obviously you need to intervene.

@Candyy007 how do they know how many kg they weigh?

Clefable · 20/04/2026 20:18

I’d want to know where this is coming from. My 7yo has absolutely no awareness of ‘thinness’ being desirable or ‘superior’ in any way. It’s not something we’ve ever spoken about, we talk about how it’s important to be fit and active and eat well so our bodies have the right kind of energy, but she’s never spoken negatively about her own body.

As it happens, she’s quite a tall and solid build and her best friend is short and very slight so there’s an immediate contrast there, but neither of them have ever commented on it to the other (except for DD1 being able to pick her friend up Grin). I don’t think it’s on her radar (and long may that remain).

At 6, it seems like they’re being exposed to either some media they shouldn’t be or someone is repeating stuff they’ve heard at home.

It must be from somewhere. Online or school, older girls? You should try and find out.

Definitely have a discussion about how it's much more important to be strong and healthy than 'thin'.

That very thin people are just as potentially unhealthy as very big ones. But you shouldn't judge yourself or other on size. As it's what's inside that counts.

Doesn't necessarily need to be from the older girls. In Yr 4 the boys in DD's class were telling the girls which of them was too hairy (DD's legs), too fat (a couple of them. They absolutely weren't) and suggesting diet tips...

are they allowed screens. What are they watching?!

Have they just been weighed at school? We had a lot of that when the height and weight check was done
