To be annoyed at the pill the GP prescribed?

I’m 40, youngest DC is nearly 2 and a half and for the last year or more my periods have been all over the place, starting several days up to a week late or early almost every month. After going through a spell where one was nearly a week late followed by the next being a week early I went to the GP and asked to go back on the pill. I was on Microgynon for 20 years without any problems before I came off it to start a family.

First of all the (male) GP insisted that I have to go on a progesterone only pill because of my age (which is not true, Microgynon is perfectly safe up until about 50-55 years old), and prescribed Cerelle. I’ve been on this pill for a few months now and once again my period has just arrived, a record breaking ten days early. TEN FUCKING DAYS.

I am taking this bloody pill for one reason only and the one the GP told me I have to have is making it worse.

AIBU to think this is complete bullshit?

Get another gp to prescribed the one you want, or if you can handle the pill then maybe try a Mirena.

I'm 44 and still on the combined pill. The doctor is willing to prescribe it but I have started to order from Superdrug pharmacy online, it's easier than trying to get an appointment for the pill check at the doctor every 3-6 months. It costs about £25 for a 6 month supply.

Go back to the GP and have a discussion about contraception. Do you have other risk factors, e.g. being a smoker or having a raised BMI?

Would you consider a coil? The Mirena was life-changing for me. I haven't had a period in ages.

Also, Mirena can be used as part of HRT, if these erratic periods turn out to be perimenopause.

My gp kept swapping what pill I should be on so I just order it online from an online pharmacy now.

You can get it prescribed by your pharmacy where you collect your prescriptions. They can prescribe lots of non-dangerous things if needed.

Nope not a smoker, very active and healthy size 6-8, no issues with blood pressure or anything like that
