Has anyone switched from daily to monthly contact lenses?

Appreciate this is the wrong board but I need some advice. I’ve used daily contact lenses for the last ten years, but recently stopped my subscription to specsavers for them as I was paying £75 for 30 days worth of lenses (£24.99 every month for 30 pairs!), I can get 3 months worth of monthly lenses for £52 on vision express so it’s a no brainer to me.

But has anyone made the switch? I travel a lot so I find the dailies quite useful, but I can always grab some more if needed I guess. Just looking for some advice before I take the plunge!

I did. Works well for me. I ordered an extra ‘spare’ pair.
better for the planet too!

I went the other way. I went from monthly contacts to daily wear as I often would forget and leave them in. I pay £32 a month for 120 lenses (60 per eye) with Specsavers.

I switched from daily to monthly about 10 years ago. I use peroxide cleanser which I buy myself as my optician didn’t have that as an option. It is a bit of a palaver having to take solution and case when travelling but there’s less packaging.

I wore dailies for a few months and then switched to monthly and it’s been around 20 years now! Much prefer monthly. Not really a hassle when travelling other than bringing the solution and case. Or you could switch back to dailies for the travel bit if you found that easier?

I think this will be the route I go down, I’m reminded of a time when a friend forgot to take her solution with her on holiday and had to fly back to the mainland to get some!

I used to wear monthlies and developed an ulcer on my cornea. I nearly lost the sight in that eye and to be honest the vision I have in that eye now is probably only 75% of what it was.

The consultant said that in his opinion he would not allow monthlies to be sold.

He said he sees more infections and worse in people who use them than any other type of lens.

Even with the best and most stringent hand hygiene, a month is a long time to keep them free of bacteria.

That was in 2021. I switched to dailies and ever since have not had a single problem.

Have to admit I’m torn between 2 weekly and monthly! The dailies just feel like a lot of waste at the moment

I tried a couple of years ago and my anxiety went through the roof. I couldn't cope with the stress of worrying if I'd cleaned them properly and the extra few minutes at night. Decided to stick with dailies even though they cost more.

Chocolatecoffeecup · 20/04/2026 07:35

You can trial monthlies for free with Specsavers.

I've been using dailies for years. A few months ago I trialled monthlys because of the cost. I'd previously a only worn my lenses a few days a week so dailies made sense but for the last couple of years I've been wearing them every day so I thought monthlies might make more sense.

I had two monthly's break within a week or so of using them. It could have been user error but still not ideal. I also don't think they get fully clean.

I now use dailies again but I sometimes reuse them once or twice before throwing them out so I effectively wear them for 2-3 days. I'm not sure if there's a reason why I shouldn't do this but it seems better than using a pair for a month...

Chocolatecoffeecup · 20/04/2026 07:35

I also found I could feel the monthlies more on my eye as they're thicker.

sashh · 20/04/2026 07:40

You could also buy cheaper dailies.

NotAnotherScarf · 20/04/2026 07:46

I tried. Hated it. They are almost identical to dailies and you know how often one breaks, rolls up etc...

Plus the fag of cleaning them especially if you've had a drink. Travel was a nightmare because I'd forget where I'd put them in the hotel and without them I couldn't see to find them.

Love dailies so easy and convenient

Roserunner · 20/04/2026 07:52

I've been wearing monthly lenses for about 30 years now. The only issue I had was when my DC was a baby and I had the monthly lenses you could sleep in. I developed an ulcer on my eye. It's fine now but must have scarred my eyeballs as the opticians can always see it. I think that was down to focusing more on a newborn and neglecting myself.

I wear the monthly lenses, Specsavers send 3 months at a time with solutions and I always seem to have a spare. If you forget solution or run low, you can go into Specsavers and they tend to give you a trial bottle and pot for free.

linelgreen · 20/04/2026 07:59

Dailies are so much better I tried monthlies and never felt 100% confident that they were good for my eyes.

HoskinsChoice · 20/04/2026 08:03

I wear fortnightly ones, have done for 20 years. I forget to change them so I reckon I probably wear them for a month. Never had a single problem with them. Much cheaper and less hassle than dailies.

Catza · 20/04/2026 08:03

I use the ones you can leave in. At least that's what they advertised years ago when I first started using them. I noticed that they no longer advertise it and now say you should only leave them in for a week although nothing changed about the lense itself. I still leave them in for a month. I'm now into my 10th year of doing it.
Before then, I used a different brand which you had to take out and clean. No issues. I've been wearing contacts since I was 20. I am 42 now and I have only used dailies for one month out of all this time.
