to ask my neighbour to stop DIY for the night?

It is nearly 8pm on a Sunday. My 7yo has school tomorrow. The walls are shaking with his banging. I just gave my son a bath and you could feel the bath vibrating. Genuinely not sure if I'm just being grumpy or if I would be reasonable in asking him to give it a rest for the night...

Its not even 8 pm yet. You are being ridiculous to think people should revolve their lives around your kid.

AluckyEllie · 19/04/2026 19:48

Not being unreasonable. I would go round at 8 and ask him to stop as your kids are going to bed. If he’s rude or doesn’t stop I’d have the music very loud when you get up for the school run tomorrow!

Are they normally unreasonable? Could be time had for away from them as it’s still light outside but yeah you yanbu.

I think it depends on the circumstances. What is he doing? If it's a full on renovation then yes he is being unreasonable to work this late. If it's just an odd spot of diy I'd wait a bit

Honestly thought 8pm on a Sunday felt late to be banging and drilling adjoining walls. But as I said, maybe just me being grumpy.

This would kill me - I would be complaining about it being done on a Sunday full stop - also check your local council laws - it’s often illegal to do building work at certain times and days

It is a renovation but he is doing it himself. The house is very old. Has no central heating and toilet is still outside. He wants to flip it! Very cool project, but very noisy.

CHeck your council website - mine says this:

  • No work to be carried out on a Sunday and bank holidays if can be avoided or for emergencies

I don't know him very well as he doesn't actually live there (nobody does!)

Ours were drilling at nearly 1am several times a couple of weeks ago. I appreciate that it was school holidays but my DH still had to get up for work.

Entitled fuckers!

In my council area you have to finish noisy home DIY by 5pm on Sundays.

Council site says avoid Sunday and bank holidays but it's not a legal requirement.

Urgh, that's hard. Hopefully he'll stop in 10-15 mins, when it's 8pm. 🤞

As you say not a legal requirement but the council gives the guidelines for its own area as that is how they take into account noise complaints - i.e. if I complained to my council about noise at 4pm on a Sunday they would point me to their guidelines about 5pm being the reasonable stoppage time. If I complained about noise at 6pm they would log it. If you see what I mean? If your child has a bedtime and cannot sleep then it's not unreasonable to pop over and ask if he can do quiet work for the remainder of the night.

I grew up in the Uk, was used to being able to cut the grass, wash cars, do DIY on Sundays but now I’m in Germany I actually appreciate our Sunday quiet days and I don’t find it unreasonable. Life just be organised a different way. I can do my garden with weeding etc on a Sunday but no power tools. Shops are closed too.
