Going into the city but feel so fat

I’m going to meet a friend in London for the day but I feel so fat and ugly and just feel like cancelling (I won’t). I feel more comfortable with my coat but I’m worried I will look silly? It’s 13 degrees now and later will be 17 degrees. When I return in evening it will be around 8 degrees. Will I look stupid wearing a big winter coat? I have no other jacket and feel really fat without one.

we will be outdoors for the entire day

Sorry you’re feeling like this. Your friend will just be pleased to spend time with you! Anything goes clothes wise. It will be useful to have your coat for later when it gets cold.

You'll be roasting in a big winter coat, what about a big cardigan instead. I promise nobody is looking at you and giving you a second thought, look around the city streets and you'll see people of all shapes and sizes just getting on with their own day and not giving a shit what a complete stranger to them looks like.

No-one will take that much notice, everyone is just trying to get to were they are going. I love London, but there's that many people that unless you are on the pull, in a pub, what people are wearing doesn't register. People from much hotter climates, wear coats all year round in England. Don't let how you think you look, stop you from being out and about.

Dozer · 18/04/2026 11:21

Loads of people in London at the moment wearing or carrying winter coats. It’s fine.

Shoxfordian · 18/04/2026 11:21

Nobody cares apart from you - wear a coat, don't wear a coat. Be 10 stone or 30. Whatever. Its London. Have a good day

Divebar2021 · 18/04/2026 11:22

I guess my question would be why do you not have clothes that you feel nice in? I get the desire to cover up but will you feel comfortable if everyone’s got their lighter clothes and sunglasses on?

Silverbirchleaf · 18/04/2026 11:24

No one will even glance at your direction. There’s people of all shapes and sizes in London.

IPM · 18/04/2026 11:24

Think about how many people you're going to pass during your day in London, and then ask yourself how many of them you're going to remember a few seconds later.

No-one's going to be interested in what you look like, what you weigh, or whether you're wearing a coat.

Now just go and have a great time.

There are loads of fat people, thin people and middle sized people. Nobody care how fat or thin you are. You sound very upset about your weight.

Speaking as someone who is hugely overweight atm, I get it op,I really do!

It’s really horrible to feel so crap about one’s body and spring is when reality bites and all enveloping darker layers are replaced by fewer, lighter, brighter clothes!

The key though is to run with it! I promise you! You are still you no matter what weight you are! Your character hasn’t changed.

Spend a little time and effort on yourself and you will feel better. You have to breathe, and accept yourself for who you are right now. I very much agree with pp who asked why you don’t have one outfit that you feel good in?

This may be changing in the face of weight loss injections but still right now are lots of good, reasonably priced clothing options available in shops and supermarkets for larger sizes.

Treat yourself! Get your hair done. Give yourself a simple mani and pedi. Apply a little fake tan. Buy one brighter piece of clothing that you feel good in and really own it. I guarantee that the more you get out and about and walk and talk and see friends, the easier it is to
get healthier and lighter if you want to. The alternative of staying at home and isolated is that we go deeper in to our own heads and our own unhelpful thoughts and even deeper in to the fridge sometimes! It’s a self-fuelling vicious cycle! I know this because I do it myself when I am not in the right head space.

I promise you, despite feeling self-conscious, the little boost you get from buying one nice piece of clothing and far more importantly, spending a lovely day with your friend, will change your mood for the better!

Ditch the winter coat which will drag you down. Maybe take a jumper you can tie around your waist if you don’t need it and arm yourself with a small umbrella and good walking shoes and you will feel freer and lighter! London is usually boiling because of the volume of people! Maybe keep an eye out for a light mac when you are there? And most of all, enjoy the day! 💐

Your friend wants to spend time with you op remember and your clothes won’t matter to her half as much as you feeling comfortable in yourself!

I'm fat and live in London. I want to tell you glibly not to worry there are all shapes and sizes here and there are. But I understand how you feel anyway and I also hate going out without a top layer because I think it's more flattering etc for my personal body shape.

Try a cardie or a wrap or something maybe if you don't want to be boiling?
