AIBU about these tradesmen

I had some new flooring installed on Wednesday. I told the installers I wasn’t happy with how they did the trim and I was never told that someone else would have to come and “stretch” the carpet that adjoins some of the new laminate. They just shrugged and told me to take it up with the store, as the installer is just a contractor. I have had several conversations with the store and I’m told they will organise something etc.

Further to this the installers (2 men), left mess for me to clean up. One of them used my toilet and left visible remnants of poo streaking the bowl and the next day I found cigarette butts in my garden.

Surely I am not unreasonable to be unhappy about all of this?

It feels so disrespectful to me. I was furious when I realised all of this after they left. I am going to pursue the less than ideal job they did of course. But all the other things they did just makes me wonder why they thought it was ok to do.

I will attach a couple of pictures. The trim they did looks so odd to me. when I pointed it out they said it’s how they always do it.

Yep that's crap. The fag butt's are a bit here and there...but given the sloppy work it just adds to the issue.

Assuming you have a brush in the loo then there is no need. As some who worked at other people's homes, I tried to avoid using the loo at all (mainly for the faf of taking my boots off) but I would ensure it was left clean

BlueMum16 · 18/04/2026 08:09

I would've been happy with that work.

In the 4th picture there looks to be a gap in the actual flooring.

The last picture with the carpet needs a different trim. I'm assuming the carpet was already there.

I wouldn't get hung up on the mess in picture 3, the poo stain or the cigarette butt.

Have you spoke to the store? At they sending someone to replace the trim and fix the floor/carpet.

BCBird · 18/04/2026 08:11

There does seem to be a lack of customer care and professional pride. Things that we previously thought as common.place, don't seem the norm.any more.

KatiePricesKnickers · 18/04/2026 08:14

They have made a mistake cutting one bit and left a hole.
That’s not acceptable.
The rest is ok, what would be the alternatives?

Spaghettea · 18/04/2026 08:17

The cigarette litter would have made me hit the roof. So many tradesmen get away with poor service.

Yes, I have a toilet brush in the loo. I understand sometimes you’ve just got to go, but the disrespect at leaving it in that state!

Yes, multiple conversations with the store manager. Someone even came out and took pictures, haven’t heard back yet as to what they will do. But I will follow it up.

Have you paid?
Hope not because then you’ve got leverage.

I was not expecting to see disjointed trim I think, it looked a bit of a bodge job to me. They also told me I should have removed all the skirting. No one mentioned that at the time of measure and quote. It’s a learning experience for sure for me.

Paid in full 😭 I paid a deposit and then paid the balance two days before the day of installation. I am fairly relentless when I feel like something is not right and they have tried to get away with it, so I will keep going. If I don’t hear from them on Monday then I will be sending all the pictures to their head office customer service team. It’s just so bloody frustrating having to do all this.

You either remove skirting or have trim. I have trim on all my wood floor. Corners are difficult but I wouldn't be accepting that.

It shouldn't be a big job for them to put right.

Did you pay the store to supply and fit? Did you use a credit card by any chance?

How long since the store came out?

Downunderduchess · 18/04/2026 08:31

@BlueMum16 Paid by bank transfer to their account. It was installed on Wednesday and a salesman came out Thursday evening to check it. So waiting for them to respond to me at the moment.

Most people don’t remove the skirting because it generally triggers needing to redecorate the room, and is obviously more expensive.
It is a better job though.
The disjointed trim is them having to find a solution. The first picture also looks like they could have got a bit closer to the corner.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 18/04/2026 08:33

Which company?

BlueMum16 · 18/04/2026 08:35

So it's only been a couple of days. They need to speak to the fitter and agree a solution. I'd give them a week and put in writing.

Paying even the deposit on a credit card (think it has to be minimum of £100) gives you credit card protection which is why I'd asked.

The problem is stores outsourcing rather than employing their own people. There is no incentive for contractors to do a good job.
That and a lack of training in skills, pride and sadly all too common, what can i get away with attitude.
Next time pick your own people. Am sorry for you . You know where not to ever go to again for flooring.
