Throat clearing tic

Hello.
my son has a throat clearing tic which started at Christmas. I had 3 months in my head as a time frame and hoped it might be gone by then, but it hasn’t
if your child has had a throat clearing tic, how long did it last for?
TIA

My DS10 has had many tics, starting when he was around 5. At one point it was throat clearing, but each tic generally lasts maybe 3-6 months, then he stops and another one develops! Overall things have slowly improved as he’s got older and as hard as it sometimes is, ignoring them is really the best policy.

I had similar as a child. My vocal tics lasted less time than my motor tics, but I think both were several months and came and went over the years. But that doesn't mean the same will happen for your son. I would say though, please don't make your son feel self conscious about it. I could tell my tics annoyed my parents and used to be told off about them. Other kids laughing or mimicking them also didn't help, but that's harder to stop.

I had these and my dc do too.
They last longer if I bring attention to them or they try to stop them. Usually it passes and turns into another tic…

I always have a few tics on the go at any one time. I had a throat clearing tic for a few years in my 20s. It got better but I’ve noticed it return recently. I have a lot of stress and anxiety in my life right now.

My dd had a habitual cough which i would say was a form of tic. I took her to the dr who basically said it wasn't a infection type of cough, but habit.
Gp said to distract but that didn't really work. It went after about 3 months.

My son had vocal tics from aged around 7 to 12. They would change periodically: clearing throat, gulping, whistling etc. Each lasting 3-6 months. It is only seeing your post that has made me realise he hasn’t had one for a while (now early teens).

My DD had a couple of tics after stressful / traumatic life events. The first one (throat clearing) probably lasted a year. I kept telling her off because it annoyed me. Didn't realise it was involuntary. Felt bad afterwards. As said, the usual advice is to ignore it.

My 11 year old boy has tics that come and go. He’s got a habitual cough just now and it’s driving me mad. Coughs multiple times a minute.

Ignore it.

Yes! My son over a good few years. We would think it had gone an d cleared up then it would come back!
we finally got to the top of the list and was about to see a referral doc and covid hit. All got cancelled. I reckon it may have been an age thing or an allergy he outgrew I’m not sure but he does it only every so often now when he has a cold so must be mucous related. Sorry I’m no help but solidarity as we had no idea and exhausted all medicines and nasal sprays xxx

footballmadboys · 17/04/2026 23:41

Thanks everyone. We absolutely ignore it and my other children are very good at not mentioning it.

Mine from toddlerhood had vocal and motor tics.

the throat clearing and sniffing ones are hard to ignore but the more attention is drawn to them the more anxious they get and the more tics they produce. The tics started off quite subtle but developed in range and persistence over time - always increasing in times of stress.

eventually ended up with a diagnosis of Tourette’s syndrome

Mine has a massive range of vocal and motor tics - affecting all their body - they change and develop over time.

keep a record of them. Could be a transient thing that passes but if it persists or develops having a record of the types of tics will aid drs understanding.

Throat clearing was actually asthma in my son.

Muteduck · 18/04/2026 15:15

I have awful tics.
My throat clearing tics did go after a few months, but the resrt stayed with me.

It’s a massive red flag as a symptom
of adhd
