AIBU to rule out Lucy (as a baby name) because of the Lucy Letby association?

We're having a baby girl in June, and my DH loves the name Lucy. I think the name itself is lovely but will not agree to it only because of the association to Lucy Letby. My DH thinks that I've gone mad and has said that it's a popular enough name that she will not be anyone's first thought. He also feels that she's mostly been forgotten. My feeling is that she could be in the news for many more years, documentaries are still being made, and she's become more internationally known. I want to avoid naming my daughter Lucy for the same reason that I would avoid naming her Myra or Rose. Thoughts?

Think about how many baby boys nowadays are named Fred or Freddie. Nobody’s thinking about the Wests when they say those names! Don’t worry about it.

Likewise, loads of boys are called Ted despite Ted Bundy!

It's your association OP. When I hear Lucy I think of the blue baby out of Z nation.

FruityFrog · 17/04/2026 14:05

@nomas initially yes, but they're much to young to know who she was.

TappyGilmore · 17/04/2026 14:08

YABU. Your DH is correct. Lucy is such a common name that people do not automatically associate it with Lucy Letby.

RaraRachael · 17/04/2026 14:12

The Letby connection wouldn't even enter my head.

ThePants999 · 17/04/2026 14:14

I have a Lucy and the association has never even occurred to me.

Madarch · 17/04/2026 14:15

It wouldn't have crossed my mind, but it has yours and you won't be able to un-forget that.

Best you both find a name you are both in to.

mondaytosunday · 17/04/2026 14:18

I make no association with her. It’s not like she’s some super famous pop star when you’d find three kids in every year with her name.

unsure200 · 17/04/2026 14:25

my daughters name is Lucy snd I’ve never even thought of it

midnights92 · 17/04/2026 18:33

My sister is Lucy Rose and this has literally never occurred to anyone. You're overthinking.

Alwaystired23 · 17/04/2026 18:37

Well my name is Lucy and I'm also a nurse! I have only had 1 patient say anything to me in reference to LL when introducing myself. I also know 5 other Lucy's, so I don't associate the name with LL.

Triskellion75 · 17/04/2026 18:40

I have a Lucy and for some reason never even made the connection until now. 😆

How about Lucia instead if it bothers you?

DilemmaDelilah · 18/04/2026 06:54

Goodness! I have a Lucy in the family and I have never once associated her name with Lucy Letby!

If you do... then I don't suppose anything anyone says is going to change your mind.

coffeetoffeechocolate · 18/04/2026 08:40

I was in the same predicament when pregnant with my second who turns two this week. Of the girl names we chose, Lucy was the only one that suited her. Ultimately we chose a different first name and gave her Lucy as a middle name but still wish we went with Lucy as a first name.

What about Lucia, pronounced Lu-chee-ah?

I disagree, Madeleine is a lovely name and no one should feel it's out of bounds.

But I do. Can't help how I feel!

For you, yes fine, but don't intimate it to your friend.

Firefly1987 · 21/04/2026 20:31

I do feel she has tainted what is a lovely name, yes.

worldshottestmom · 21/04/2026 20:34

Do you think of John Venables everytime you hear the name 'John'? I doubt it. Lucy is a very common and beautiful name, not nearly peculiar enough to have this association.

Though I do get the sentiment, as my ex wanted to name our daughter 'Mariah' and literally everybody only referred to one person when I told them the suggestion...

Notmyreality · 21/04/2026 20:40

Ridiculous.

Where did I say I would?!

Also, I'm not sure why you're so intent in telling me, a stranger on the internet, what I can and can't say to my friend!

It is far too common/normal a name for anyone to make a connection to Lucy Letby. Lots of people in the general public are called Lucy and many well-known people & literary characters are called Lucy so I guarantee it won’t cross a single persons mind at all in your child’s lifetime. Same thing with Rose like another poster said above.

It’s not a distinctive/less common name like Myra where people will make the connection pretty instantly because you hear the name so infrequently (in fact that’s a big reason why that name died out).

Edited

I immediately thought that. Was Myra very much an "of the time" name, unlike, for example, Mary, Rose or Samantha? Because we don't think of Mary Bell when we hear Mary, but with Myra...

I think of Narnia. But I would only choose Lucy or Edward (I realise many people know the gender by the time they pick the name, but in case the scan was wrong). The reason I wouldn't pick Peter isn't due to the killer, though, it's because Peter and Susan seem dated, while the first two seem classic. Others may have different views.
