To ask why people insist on making calls using speakerphone when in a public place?

I mean aside from the obvious fact that it's highly irritating and inconsiderate to those around you, I don't understand the benefit. The sound is tinny, unpleasant and distorted, and you have to wave it in front of your face instead of simply holding it to your ear as we have done since Alexander Graham Bell were a lad.

I can see the point if you're at home, say cooking, and you pop it down on the worktop, or you're having a family chat with multiple people looking at the phone at the same time, but people on their own - on the bus, for example - I just don't get it.

I also hate it when other people put me on speakerphone - I find the resulting quality of sound uncomfortably unpleasant.

I'm in Italy at the moment and it's every bit as bad here.

Please explain, as it might help me to find it less annoying.

I once saw someone (stranger) join in the conversation. The caller was all what are you doing. Person said I assumed that since you having a loud public call that it was open to all of us to join in. If you don't want that perhaps you shouldn't use the speakerphone.

It was brilliant.

That’s excellent! More people should do this to these morons.

I agree @auserna
DH was in hospital for 6 weeks last year and most of the patients on the ward had public telephone conversations that everyone couldn't avoid hearing. It was so noisy and so annoying.

People need to mind their own buisness and just get over it.

So keep your conversation private then @EasterBunBun11
It isn't difficult.

I find I can hear better with the phone to my hear and if the other person is not using speakerphone.

For those who say using a speakerphone is better why can't you use a headset instead?

I used to do it as my phone was broke so I had to put it on speaker as it was too quiet when not on speaker.

I do it now if I'm in a really loud busy place and cant hear the person.

To be honest I really dont care what others think around me, Im busy and if I need to take a call and put it on speaker I will. To many people get up in arms about sweet FA now. People need to mind their own buisness and just get over it.

Nice of someone to admit they're a thoughtless entitled twat.

OP wouldn’t it be easier to just ask all those you encounter doing this why. You might then get an answer to your question.

blunderbuss12 · 16/04/2026 20:14

The thing I'm always struck by with this as well is it's not based on age. Lots of older folk do this, perhaps more than younger people.

bigboo · 16/04/2026 20:45

Tell you what Easterbunbun, I'll pick my nose and flick it at people. After all, I don't care what people think and if they don't like it, they can move. If I need to pick my nose, I will. How does that sound?

bittertwisted · 16/04/2026 21:19

I absolutely loathe it, especially the listening to tinny YouTube shite blasting out. To me it is the height of ill manners and poor upbringing, along with not waiting to let people off trains before you barge on.
society does not seem to care anymore about teaching entitled children that the world does not revolve around them.
examples this week include a 3 hour flight with a tween blasting an iPad out, and a child being allowed to eat his lunch in a very exclusive hotel rooftop pool, lovingly smearing his chips and tomato sauce through the water

I expect the answer is most likely to be, "Fuck off," than anything more informative.

I did once go over to a woman who was having a loud call in The place to Eat in John Lewis to tell her she could purchase headphones on the very same floor. The people on the next table, who were clearly becoming increasingly irritated by her, practically cheered.

(I promise this really did happen.)

This is the most surprising.

Years ago when I first noticed it was almost exclusively schoolchildren. And well….schoolchildren.

But now it seems to be across all demographics which is disturbing.

Because im not the one with a problem, if someone has a problem with me on the phone then they can move.
