In a casual restaurant cafe style place for dinner / tea (evening meal), it was lovely and quiet with about five other tables occupied. Lovely music playing. I'd just sat down when around eight or nine people came in, four adults and the rest kids. One youngish child and the rest pre teens.

They were very loud, the adults louder than the children. Almost shouting when speaking, taking no consideration got other diners. Definitely using their outdoor voices.

Maybe I'm uptight but AIBU to think it's rude to be so loud and not speak in hushed voices when indoors and people are eating?

If you are reading this, adults, who spoiled our experience and you were in BK and you had kids called Matilda and George, please be quiet when eating out. No one wants to hear your whole conversations. I know your kids are called Matilda and George because you were so bloody loud and the whole restaurant could hear you!

Burger King?

Ha ha ha. It's an independent place. I did say it was nice. Definitely not Burger King!

Well anyway I can't really say I'd get het up about some loud people

Personally I prefer a lively atmosphere to everyone talking in "hushed" tones.

I was in a lovely family run Italian restaurant at the weekend. The noise as the staff greeted their regular customers!

Bishopbrennansbum · 14/04/2026 19:06

Hushed tones? Like in a chapel or something?

Nofeckingway · 14/04/2026 19:09

Don't be naive previous posters , we all know the type of people . Loud and acting like they are the only ones on the place . Very annoying and whenever I catch myself even slightly doing this , I realize that it is not nice for others .

Must depend on the person and the establishment. My favourite Italian has been going for years and is absolutely buzzing with energy. Expecting hushed tones is ridiculous.

Hushed tones and outside voices, reminds me of primary school language.

HeddaGarbled · 14/04/2026 19:18

I’m with you, OP: keep your conversation for your table - we don’t all want to hear every word of it.

Danikm151 · 14/04/2026 19:21

We occasionally go to a local cafe as a special treat. The last time we went it was not a treat. One family was so loud and their teen kids had food from the local chippy! There were only 4 of them but may as well have been20. When they left others in the place were visibly relieved too!

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 14/04/2026 19:26

Don't think you're going to get much sympathy here, OP, where any and all behaviour seems to be permissible. But I'm with you. If you're two feet away from each other stop bloody shouting.

JMSA · 14/04/2026 19:28

YANBU.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 14/04/2026 19:28

I dont think hushed tones are necessary , but they do sound insufferable.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 14/04/2026 19:30

I hate it when people dominate the space with their noise. No one else can have a conversation because they are bellowing. Everything gets louder and louder as people have to shout to compete. They seem so oblivious to the impact they have on everyone else.

LughLongArm · 14/04/2026 19:32

I’m afraid that’s what happens when you go out in the world, OP — you meet people who have different ideas about what constitutes acceptable behaviour,

takealettermsjones · 14/04/2026 20:11

Well done, you went nine days before posting another "gah, those rubbish parents!" thread. 👏🙄

I hosted some Nigerian teenagers once. I took them out to McDonald’s for food and they were do, so quiet.

it turned out they’d been told English people are very quiet in restaurants and were trying to fit in.

FunMustard · 14/04/2026 20:26

YANBU. I don't mind chatting, I don't mind laughing. I don't need hushed tones, but what I don't want is shouting so loud you can't hold your own conversations because it's too difficult to concentrate!
