To quite like having a bit of money set aside that’s just mine?

I’ve realised I quite like having a small amount of money set aside that only I know about. It’s not about hiding anything or doing anything with it, I just like the feeling of independence and security that comes with knowing it’s there. I think it gives me a bit of peace of mind, even if I never need to use it.

AIBU to feel this way? Is it weird that I’m not completely open and sharing of this?

I think everyone should have an ‘ escape ‘ fund . Look how many women on here are in abusive relationships but cannot afford to leave or stuck in a job they hate , or any other reason for having private money tucked away . Money gives choices it’s not always about buying stuff .

Me and my husband have a joint bank account which we pay enough in to to cover all our bills and have a little buffer and then have completely separate finances otherwise. People always think this is weird but it means we can spend or save as we like. We’re both save-aholics so we are both quite frugal but we do occasionally treat ourselves and it’s nice to be able to do that without having to explain it to the other.

Not at all unreasonable.

We never subscribed to the MN trope often always having totally shared finances, and if you didn't then you were in a financially abusive relationship. I too always liked to have some money which was just mine. It felt so much better and more secure.

I didn't like the lack of privacy of putting everything into a joint account. Nor did DH. So apart from a joint account that was simply for food and some bills, we didn't do it.

Absolutely wise and correct. Always have a bit of start over cash if possible.

This isn’t weird at all - it’s exactly what we do. Cover the joint spending this way, in proportion to what we respectively earn (it’s about 60/40) and then keep the rest of our own money.

It’s ok to have your own savings why wouldn’t it be. It is cringe though when people call it an escape fund just call it savings

NotAnotherScarf · 14/04/2026 07:00

For 30 years we had completely shared finances. We are both risk adverse and like to save. And really don't need to worry about money ever again.

Then I retired and just have a small part time job...this money goes into a separate account which pays for treats, meals out, holidays (although for big hols abroad we have a separate holiday fund) and my beer money. I also like clothes and pay for them through this account.

My wife uses the main bank account for her spending but as she still works i feel guilty spending that money on fun things. I was brought up with very little money and when we first got married we had very little cash to waste. So have always been cautious

My wife still worries about money however. She doesn't want to know what is in my account. So its grest that I am spending money that isnt needed for something important. Money that is earnt just for the purpose of spending

Whaleandsnail6 · 14/04/2026 07:08

We both have our own pot of money to do as we please. We pay proportionately to the bills according to our incomes, and then the rest is split between us both into our own bank accounts

I don't know what dh does with his and he doesn't know what I do with mine.

I wouldn't like to only have joint money. Nothing at all to hide but I just like knowing how much I have to independently spend/save at the end of the month

UniquePinkSwan · 14/04/2026 07:12

That’s fine as long as you’d be ok finding out your DH had money hidden away. On here, it’s seen as ok for a woman to do this but if a man has money hidden it’s suddenly financial abuse.
