SPEED BUMP MAKING HOUSE SHAKE!

Posting on AIBU as I can't find anywhere else to put this problem. I have a large speed bump about 5 metres on the road outside my bedroom. It has always caused significant noise and vibration and I noticed a crack in my bedroom wall which I believe was caused by the tremours. It is made of rubber and quite large and recently split. The council (Gateshead) denied it was split and then repaced it at 5am on a Sunday morning. The vibration of traffic going over the new bump is just as bad if not worse and literally making my gound floor flat walls, floor and bed shake. The noise and vibration is so loud it makes me jump. I have contacted the council repeatedly and been shoved from one department to another and eventually contacted the chief executive who has not addressed any of my concerns and closed the case. Solicitors do not seem to want to take on a case involving going up against the council. It has given me anxiety to the point I am on anxiety medication and I wake up constantly with the vibration and noise of traffice going over the bump. The 20mph speed calming device has been out of order for over 2 months and the Highway Dept and Roads Dept each say the other department should deal with it. I am so stressed I am constantly close to tears. Has anyone else had this problem and had it dealt with successfully?

I did try local councillor and I believe they did get in touch with council and got no reply!

Sounds awful OP! Do you know if your neighbours are experiencing similar issues? If so, it might be worth banding together to try your local councillor again - a petition, collective evidence of the issues etc. A collective voice is usually more powerful than a lone one in these circumstances.

I did ask upstairs neighbour but he isn't in very often and it doesn't affect him. There is a junction where there are no houses to disturb so they could move it there but I am getting virtually no response at all!! It's driving me insane!

We had local speed humps that were so high they were stripping the exhaust systems off cars. The council said that they'd measured the humps and they were 'within agreed limits'. About a year later they took the tops off all of them. I think it was just the sheer volume of complaints they got (I had to drive that way every working day, and got through three exhausts in six years). So I would say don't give up, just keep complaining.

I notice in streets near me that have speed bumps the residents park their cars to force you to weave in and out which slows down the traffic.
