AIBU to worry about what to wear to a home interview?

I have a job interview to work as office admin at a builders firm. The job is split between the office and working at home.
The interview is at the married couple owners home. I dont know what to wear!
I dont want to go too dressy bit also not too casual. I haven't worked for 15 years since being a sahm and im just really nervous and being at their house has thrown me.

It is still a professional interview so dress for that, regardless of the venue.

I also should have said that I dont really have anything smart to wear and its on Monday.

You have no choice but to go casual then.

Good luck, hope you smash it 💐

Shops are open today and tomorrow. All you need is a smart top and a pair of trousers/skirt. Charity shops or Primark is your best bet if you don't want to spend a lot of money.
I worn the same thing for interviews for years - a rose blouse from Uniqlo and a pair of navy cigarette trousers from H&M. It's smart but not too dressy.

Can't you go out now and get something today or tomorrow? It doesn't need to be a suit or anything expensive, but it's not hard to get something smarter than the casual gear you've been wearing as a SAHM. Just make a bit of an effort.

CornishPorsche · 11/04/2026 13:07

Well, what are you proposing to wear from your wardrobe then?

tarheelbaby · 11/04/2026 13:10

I'd go for some smart trousers and a nice top with a blazer/cardigan and good, sensible shoes (brogues/oxfords/naice trainers/ballet flats). Make sure your hair (and make up if you wear it) is tip top. @Catza nails it.

Since you'll be in the office sometimes, you'll need to look professional but I doubt the office is full-on corporate with suits. Presumably most people there would also be dressed for working on a building site.

When you are WFH, you might end up on video calls so would need a nice top for that.

(I think it's a bit odd that the interview is at their house ... I would find that really weird.)

RedShoes11 · 11/04/2026 13:15

I have navy trousers, navy smart cardigan and black brogues, would that work?
They have a site office but its more for the builders I think. She said the head office is at their house, she does accounts and the training will be there.

Sounds fine to me. You don't need anything fancier than that.

iamfedupwiththis · 11/04/2026 13:17

Can you not nip out and buy a nice blouse from the supermarket?

Maybe there isn't an office, as such - perhaps just a yard where the trucks get stored or something

iamfedupwiththis · 11/04/2026 13:18

I have a standard interview outfit

Black trousers, that I team with either a black and white blouse, or white and black blouse, works every time

CornishPorsche · 11/04/2026 13:18

Sounds perfectly reasonable OP.

RedShoes11 · 11/04/2026 14:21

I have dark jeans and a navy blazer is that too casual?

OP posts:
Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 11/04/2026 14:23

Trousers, blazer, top sorted. All these can be picked up from Sainsbury’s today.

RedShoes11 · 11/04/2026 14:29

I dont really have any money to buy a new outfit

Wear the trousers you mentioned, not the jeans. The blue trousers and blazer should be okay. Ideally with a blouse or shirt or plain top if you've not got those. Generally go a level smarter for interview than you'd wear day to day in the job. They could be okay with casual but plenty would expect a certain level and if you want the job, I wouldn't risk it at this point. Borrow something from a friend?

Upsidedownagain · 11/04/2026 17:37

Wear what you've got that looks the smartest. I've done many interviews (on the interviewer side) and as long as people look respectable, I don't even notice. People don't tend to wear matching jackets/ trousers / skirts and high heels anymore like I used to back in the day - maybe for a very top job, thats all. And we're looking for someone with the right qualifications and / or experience that would fit in with the team, not the best dressed.

Just make sure you have thought about what they will likely ask you and why you think you are suited to the role. That's the key part!

mindutopia · 11/04/2026 17:41

I think your suggestion sounds fine. Gone are the days of wearing suits to interviews unless you’re like C-suite. I haven’t worn business attire in over a decade.

It is a bit weird to be interviewing you at their home. Dh works mostly from home, but he’d never have staff over to our house. When he interviews, they do it on the job site, or alternatively, lots of people meet at Costa or similar. I suppose it makes sense though if you will be doing any work from their home office.
