Social media has ruined my concentration and changed my personality.

To think that social media, Instagram, Tiktok, YouTube, Facebook ,Mumsnet , Reddit , Chatgpt, etc have totally ruined my concentration span and now make reading/concentrating on a book or a movie really unappealing and uninteresting ?
I am much more interested in watching 2 minute reels, then reading through comments, and basically finding out about all sorts of topics and going down rabbit holes etc. I also enjoy reading dilemmas on Facebook groups and on mumsnet and seeing what people say. I also use Chatgpt alot as like a regular counsellor.
It makes me sad as I used to be such a book lover when I was younger and I watched about 4 or 5 movies at the weekend when I was younger..its like I've completely changed involuntarily.
Anyone else feel the same?

190 million books is actually not all that many when there are ca. 70 million people in the UK. It's 2.7 books per person per year and that's actually very few. I've bought 20 books since January. So some people are buying a lot of books and a lot of people are buying none at all.

The fact that 2.7 books per person per year are sold in the UK and that some people love reading does not mean that there isn't a real issue with phone use and as the other poster who has replied to you in detail has said, these apps and social media are designed to grab and keep attention and there is a lot of research which goes into this.

Sweden is now bringing back books in schools after replacing them with laptops and ipads in the 2000s and 2010s. Pisa scores plummeted.

The same has happened in Norway and they are now banning ipads in schools after catastrophic reading scores.

Scotland has been issuing pupils with ipads, presumably copying what it's seen in Scandinavia (which it tends to do in piecemeal fashion, with bad results). They don't expect children to be able to read whole books, and as in England schools don't use textbooks. I don't think any of that helps children learn.

Also read Careless People by Sarah Winn Williams the Facebook whistleblower. They are playing us like fiddles. Put me right off. No more reels or fucking Facebook for me after the dirty truth is revealed.

Fascinating read...thanks for recomendation.

Another really helpful recommendation on here was a book called The Dose or simething like that..sorry can find original post. Have managed to drastically reduce my scrolling as a result and started reading books again.

I totally get it. Last night I was watching a series on telly, reading a book on my ipad and scrolling TikTok on my phone. I wasnt really paying attention to any of it!🙄

I could never do that. Sat in the garden this afternoon reading a book. Left the phone indoors.

No.

You are reading this stuff everywhere, and you don’t have to.

Anything ruined is down to you.

That could not be less true if you tried.

I've just finished "Stolen Focus" audiobook after seeing it recommended on this thread and I've just bought "Careless People". thanks for the recommendations.

YANBU I was such an avid reader as a child too. I don't have social media anymore, but Youtube has ruined my concentration. I am not even watching whole videos now, but looking at things in other windows, or looking things up on google. I am thinking of having a screen free half hour for reading first thing, as even magazines seem to be a challenge lately.

I have just signed up with audible to see if listening to books makes it easier to concentrate.

Su1rlie · 09/05/2026 09:16

Has anybody found away to combat this?

Azuresky68 · 09/05/2026 18:32

Yes. It was an interesting read

ScrollingLeaves · 09/05/2026 21:45

The Dose Effect book has as a starting point to never look at your phone at all before you have done everything you need to after waking up, and are ready for your day.

But there is much more than that too.

I think I’m addicts to mumsnet. I need to spend less time on it. It frustrates and depresses me (not this thread but most threads). So often I think ‘These are not my people, I would never hang out with this person’ yet I spend time online with them every day

Agreed - there are strategies in the book to follow, but they need to work with your lifestyle too eg. Retired, working, self-employed etc

Azuresky68 · 10/05/2026 11:22

Good morning. I read all the posts on here with interest. Decided to start a new thread for my own accountability regarding the use of social media. Will call it Reducing use of social media - accountability post. Please free to join. It's not about replicating this discussion posts, it's an accountabilty post for anyone wanting to post their strategy for reducing the use of social media in their daily life and staying accountable. Some people on this thread say it's easy - just don't do it but I am 69 and have found myself wasting too much time scrolling endlessly, despite my intial use being to follow my interests eg health, gardening, arts and entertainment, current affairs etc. I have been on holiday for 10 days and have made a conscious effort to reduce time on my phone.

So why am I posting here! Because I thought a new thread for those who actively want to reduce their time mindlessly scrolling might be of help. It isn't intended to be a chatty thread or it will defeat the purpose! I started off well after deciding to try on my own but the last few days I have found myself back to the scrolling. Wonder if there is an acronym for this activity?
i dont relate to the phrase Doomscrolling as i am usually looking at positive content..just on it for far too long.
I will still use my phone for life admin, specific seatches, listening to music and audiobooks. What i want to reduce is: Binge-scrolling: A term used for the act of engaging in endless, long-duration scrolling of short-form content (e.g., TikTok, Instagram Reels).
Dopamine Looping: Refers to the way digital platforms use algorithmic rewards to keep users hooked in a continuous cycle of scrolling
Anyway for now I am back to my novel!

Azuresky68 · 10/05/2026 11:36

Sorry. The link doesnt seem to work! But it's in chat.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 10/05/2026 11:38

Nah...I still manage 1-2 books a week AND go on social media a lot. But I see it in my sons :(

Musicaltheatremum · 10/05/2026 11:40

I need to go cold turkey. Not helped by having Kindle on my phone. Ugh hate my lack of concentration and motivation
