to think it’s time to ban dogs from shops and cafes?

timetoban · 10/04/2026 13:07

I’ve just read a BBC article about the increase in dog attacks in the UK.

Dogs seem to be everywhere now. Cafes, shops, even places where food is being served. I’m not anti-dog at all, but I don’t really want to be eating or shopping surrounded by them.

It’s not just about preference either. Some people are allergic, some are genuinely scared, and others just don’t want to deal with barking, smells or dogs getting under their feet. The BBC piece even mentioned people feeling like they have to avoid going out because dogs are everywhere now.

I also don’t really get how it’s hygienic in places serving food. I know people say “well-behaved dogs are fine” but not all dogs are well-behaved, and staff aren’t exactly going to challenge every owner.

Before anyone says it, yes obviously assistance dogs are different and should be allowed. That’s not what I mean.

I just feel like we’ve swung too far the other way where dog owners expect to take them absolutely everywhere, and everyone else just has to put up with it.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to have more dog-free indoor spaces again?

"Genetically engineered frankenstein" 😂😂😂😂

We need to update the bingo cards @YeOldeGreyhound @Onleemoi

Not sure why my post was deleted for calling someone odd for implying that dog owners are lying about combining cafés and walks in the same outing, and stating that they cannot possibly know unless the interrogate owners in cafés.

I knew I would come to this thread in the morning and they would be here.
Under their old username, they used to bang on about making and hiding in a giant metal box that shits and pisses everywhere.

You can be as rude, moronic or cruel as you like as long as you’re whinging about dogs. Tell some truths about these people and they’re quick to hit the report button.

The only people that need to accept dogs in establishments is the establishment owner.
If they allow dogs, then being entitled does not come into it. It is more entitled for people with views like yourself to stomp your feet and demand the manager changes things for you. You want them to change the rules for you. That is pure entitlement, and it honestly has me scratching my head when you can't see that.

But do you not think a lot of coffee shop owners have been forced to bend over backwards to accommodate dogs because everyone brings their dogs with them every time they come out now?
It's not fair to expect everyone else to enjoy having dogs there when they are eating.
Well behaved dogs with responsible owners are fine but these rules allow irresponsible dog owners to let their dogs run riot.
We were in a cafe once and a dog was barking loudly non stop, you couldn't hear yourself think and people were getting up and leaving.
Another time this woman's dog jumped up onto my husband's lap while he was eating, she laughed and when he didn't laugh she looked at him like he'd offended her ancestors.
On the other hand, we've been in cafes where we haven't known there was a dog until it has left because the owners were responsible and considerate of the other customers there.
If only all owners could be like that but they're not and there is where the issue lies.

Entitled! They shout as they demand the world revolves around them.

Who, the dog owners?

I'm sorry but I have to take issue with your comment

'(not sure what sort of idiot would stand on a dog but there you go).'

I recently boarded a train. I was, as I suspect a lot of people are, looking ahead to see what seating was available. I tripped over a large dog lying in the aisle.

I had no idea there was a dog there and I wasn't looking at the floor.

Edited

If you have even average eyesight you should have been able to see a ‘large dog’ in a narrow train aisle without your focus being on the floor.

I actually think these threads are getting weirder, if that was at all possible.

The dog friendly cafes I go to encourage dogs. One even gives you a discount on your food if you have a dog with you on certain days.

Not all have been forced to accept dogs at all.

But yes, I don't like to see badly behaved dogs either.

Adding weight to their lame anecdotes. They realise the truth of ‘I saw a dog’ doesn’t quite cut it. They haven’t be health hazards, trip hazards, snarling, yapping, drooling and so on.

Whatexcellentboiledpotatoes · 11/04/2026 12:01

Seriously? Another thread about dogs in cafes? 🙄

LighthouseLola · 11/04/2026 12:04

We have had children announcing they need a poo, Mummy has ignored them, so they’ve dropped trousers and pooed where they stood!

Again, unacceptable, in dogs and children!
It's a fact though that dog poo carries more than twice the amount of bacteria than human poo and is a major environmental pollutant. It often carries salmonella and parasites, E .coli and roundworms all of which can survive for years and is a long term health risk to humans.

Baby poo is unpleasant but highly unlikely to cause major illness.
Now there's a comparison I never dreamed I'd have to make.

A bit of baby poo doesn't scare me. Dog poo can be dangerous to humans
and I have seen more than one dog empty its bowels in a shop. Some poor bugger has to clean that up. It's vile. I don't hate dogs, they just don't belong in indoor public spaces.

Several tourists in our town got a hefty fine after missing the (prominent) No Dogs sign. The resultant kerfuffle in the press was one of the factors that lead to part of the beach being opened for dogs.

This particular beach was a case of go left at the bottom dog friendly go right no dogs.

Like yours however the dog side was more pebbly so people with children and dogs wanted the sand side.

LappingLouisa · 11/04/2026 12:10

People are quite a bit dirtier than dogs. Additionally, you're orders of magnitude more likely to catch something from another person than a dog.
If you want somewhere to be clean, start by banning people!!

How many humans do you see going around barefoot, shitting in the grass and then licking their arses clean, and then enjoy licking each other, and at times eat each others shit too!

I agree, and I don’t know why the particularly offensive poster hasn’t been banned. FWIW I’m outside a pub deep in the Surrey hills surrounded by sleeping dogs, dogs being petted and dogs nicking snacks from their owners. There are also families without dogs and many cyclists having a break. It’s absolutely joyful and I imagine the pub owner will have a tidy profit at the end of the day.

Nor does it involve grasping still-warm turds. That’s a really weird hobby

That's what a responsible owner does, if we don't there would be an uproar.

Guarantee you that some of the dog haters on this thread have cats they let free roam to shit in other people’s gardens.

Baby poo/puke is much more hideous to a lot of people than animal poo/puke. It depends what you are used to. Many years ago a friend brought her baby to a meet up and it puked on her shoulder while I was sat next to her 🤮🤮🤮

I can handle whatever comes out of animals without batting an eyelid

Admittedly not a dog hater but our cats only go out for about 10 mins a day and they come in to use the litter tray 🤣

Well clearly I am a deficient human being. When I say a large dog I mean it wasn't a handbag sized dog. It also wasn't covering the whole of the aisle but protruding into it.

At the end of the day I did trip over it, whatever the reason, but I will be more careful in future though.

Tutorpuzzle · 11/04/2026 12:44

So your previous post describing a large dog in the aisle was made up, @CarlaH ?🙄

Don’t worry, the vast majority of slobbering, yapping, pooing, peeing etc dog incidents are undoubtedly made up too.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 11/04/2026 12:53

Not everything annoying requires 'banning'.

YANBU to not like dogs in shops/cafes, its not everyone's happy scenario. YABU to think this needs government to pass legislation.

WTF of course it wasn't.

I tripped over a dog which was under my feet as I made my way along.

What part of that don't you understand?

Oh I won't worry.

Would you have tripped over a bag or is your poor eyesight exclusive to dogs?

It could have been a bag, an umbrella handle, a suitcase wheel, a folded coat...

The fact it was a dog is not the problem

Indeed that might have been the case although it has never happened so far anyway.

I was responding to somebody saying only an idiot would stand on a dog. I had no intention of doing so but was not peering intently at the floor because I was actually trying to get to a seat before the train started moving.

Personally I would make sure that I wouldn't block the aisle with any of the items listed.

Well you really don't have to "peer intently at the floor" in order to walk AND see anything in your way. How do you walk along a pavement if you can't look both at the pavement and ahead?
