to think it’s time to ban dogs from shops and cafes?

timetoban · 10/04/2026 13:07

I’ve just read a BBC article about the increase in dog attacks in the UK.

Dogs seem to be everywhere now. Cafes, shops, even places where food is being served. I’m not anti-dog at all, but I don’t really want to be eating or shopping surrounded by them.

It’s not just about preference either. Some people are allergic, some are genuinely scared, and others just don’t want to deal with barking, smells or dogs getting under their feet. The BBC piece even mentioned people feeling like they have to avoid going out because dogs are everywhere now.

I also don’t really get how it’s hygienic in places serving food. I know people say “well-behaved dogs are fine” but not all dogs are well-behaved, and staff aren’t exactly going to challenge every owner.

Before anyone says it, yes obviously assistance dogs are different and should be allowed. That’s not what I mean.

I just feel like we’ve swung too far the other way where dog owners expect to take them absolutely everywhere, and everyone else just has to put up with it.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to have more dog-free indoor spaces again?

Have you read his posts?
A sample of their suggestions -
Dogs should be shut outside shops in cages.
Dogs should be shut in cars.
Dogs should be tied up outside shops.

Dogs banned in all public spaces.
Dogs should be tied up "Next to the ashtray so all the antisocial shit stays out of the indoor space."

He makes similar/the same comments on almost every other dog thread.

Do you think there is something wrong with someone who says these things repeatedly?

What’s cruel about clipping a dog by the leash to a wall ? I showed earlier that for example in Switzerland clips are provided for that purpose.

For those worried that isn’t secure then a cage could be proivded. Not a veal crate, there would be room for movement. Zoos keep animals in cages, it happens. Not cruel.

On days when the temperature is safe to do so, there’s literally nothing wrong with leaving a dog in the car. Some modern cars even have a dog mode to keep the temperature safe.

I would prefer dogs banned everywhere, I find them extremely antisocial, and a phenomenon that very selfish people impose on the rest of us, similar to smoking. That’s not controversial. Smokers cause health problems for others, and so do dogs. Smoking causes litter and pollution and so do dogs.

Nothing I have suggested is cruel or unheard of.

It was the dog lovers who suggested putting children in the cages btw.

Why be polite to that particular poster,@Gloriia ? Their contributions spit with venom.
And I see we’re back to the bingo card! Yapping, bums on seats, scratching, slobbering…I remain intrigued as to where all these reprobate dogs are, and even if they do exist why don’t you go to dog free places??!!

Jesus, it’s not hard.

I didn't say be polite I said challenge them fine but announcing there is 'something wrong with someone' is a bit venomous in itself, no?

PottingBench · 11/04/2026 09:25

Gloriia · 11/04/2026 09:23

Well yes we have to but the point is we shouldn't have to.

Really it is common sense to walk a dog then leave it a home for a bit. Be responsible owners, think of what's best for your poor dog and crowded noisy places are not it.

Try and be considerate to others. Owners of cafes may allow dogs but others do not want them there. Why be that person that everyone without a dog thinks ffs when they're enjoying a coffee and cake and they see a dog at the next table?!

Everything you have just said has already been covered ad infinitum up thread.

She did the old ‘can’t have any friends if they take their dog to cafes’ line on another thread. Not one to listen to when it comes to decent behaviour.

Walk your dogs, leave at home go for coffee. Simple. They don't like crowded noisy places. More importantly many don't like dogs in coffee shops so think about others.

You might want to have a read of their previous posts @Gloriia . They are properly weird.

Well, like many people on this thread I’m off now for a walk and coffee with my lovely pups. It will be mainly dog walkers in the cafe I choose (hurrah) because the weather isn’t great. Bring on the slobber!

The dog could be attacked, released or stolen and used for cruel purposes.

Veal crates have been banned in Europe for 20 years.
Most zoos are moving away from keeping animals in cages.
"Room for movement" - give me strength.

Not everyone has a modern car.
The temperature in cars fluctuates hugely and cannot be relied upon not to change. On previous threads you've suggested dogs be kept in cars/cages overnight.

Dogs were here long before you. Humans have lived alongside them for tens of thousands of years.

The children in cages thing is dreadful.

Owners know if their dogs are comfortable in busy cafes much better than you do. My dog loves a pub. Will actively head towards them given the chance (which is often a good excuse for a pint).

There are plenty of dog free places for a coffee. There are plenty of dog friendly cafes. We can live and let live without ever treading on each others toes.

Me too. Want to get out to the location and get the walk circuit done and get to the café before their brunch menu ends. Both the walk and this café are new ones for us today.

See you there @Gloriia ? 😂

“Dogs” in a very broad sense have been around for thousands of years, I agree.

Dogs as we know them today - genetically engineered by humans for their own amusement - have not; they’re not natural and wouldn’t even exist were it not for humans.

Perhaps cages could be made a bit prettier, call it a kennel or crate instead.

Time to walk the dogs up the local hills, looks okay out there. Might even pop into the pub on the way back or a cafe 😆

To be honest, this is not my experience at all. Within my friendship group we finally all got kids that are school age and were beginning to get our lives back.

Then a couple of my friends got dogs and it’s like being back to square one. They can go in the odd café or pub but other than that it’s pretty limited. I actually find it really boring that now the only thing we can ever do is go for a muddy cold walk in the park. I’ve been trying to book a weekend away with my best friend and trying to find a half decent cottage somewhere near London that accepts dogs is actually really difficult. particularly when you now need an enclosed garden area, somewhere to put the dog bed and good walks on the doorstep.

I love dogs but I hate how constrained they make your life. Seeing my friends go through this has made me realise I will never get a dog!

Edited

Some owners do make their lives (and others) very difficult because their dogs must come everywhere with them, true.

A well trained and well exercised dog is fine to be left at home while their owner sees friends etc. There are so many dog sitters that taking a dog on holiday with other non dog owners is not necessary and absolutely selfish for others in the holiday group who probably daren't complain. We've seen the vitriol and entitlement from some dog owners on here so easy to see how many go along with it.

Our dog is lovely she does not come everywhere with us though. She likes a bit of quiet time as do all dogs.

My dog loves crowded noisy places thanks. 👍. I will continue to do what the owner of the coffee shop allows me to do, if that means dogs are allowed in then that’s fine. It’s up to the establishment owner not other hypothetical customers.

Oh dear @MandingoAteMyBaby.

Something must have gone very wrong in your life for this to be your hobby.

My hobbies thankfully do not involve putting a genetically engineered frankenstein-creature on the end of a chain and using it to distribute smelly squirts of piss on various bits of public infrastructure. Nor does it involve grasping still-warm turds. That’s a really weird hobby.

My conscience is clear.

Artimouse · 11/04/2026 09:57

I never understand the obsession that always arises from wanting dogs tied up outside shops etc

As a dog lover, dogs tied outside shops make me nervous! You always have to brush past them, and they are the worst of all things which is an unknown un attended dog.

Even without the fear for the safety aspects of the dog being stolen or harmed, I think its a big risk for people and don't remember the dogs tied in the 90s fondly!

So brushing past random dogs makes you nervous when they’re restrained outside (eg infinite space to escape) but not when they’re unrestrained in an enclosed interior space ?

Because it’s that latter experience which bothers those of us who dislike the ubiquity of canines in shared spaces.

I suggested the clips be located away from the entrance, eg with the smokers for that exact reason - being free to come and go without having something antisocial and unpleasant forced upon you.

The daily posts about this are so boring! I don't even take my dogs anywhere but I feel like doing it out of spite! Might bring my neighbours dogs, some street dogs and rescue dogs along, too!

It's like someone has been paid to brainwash us all with repetitive postings!
