AIBU to feel annoyed about discounted attractions for benefit claimants?

I know I’ll get slated as the origin is the daily fail but, but this kind of annoys me too! I mean as a single parent I don’t want to pay £60 to go to the zoo either.

Benefit-claiming families pay just £4 for top UK attractions

More than 80 attractions give discounts to benefit claimants, with MPs reacting furiously with one saying the system created a 'two-tier system that punishes work'.

So by that logic why are non working families being rewarded with perks - in many cases they are getting more than working families

Of course many aren't getting more then working families absolutely ridiculous. Even on nmw a 2 parent family working full time take home 50k. How much do you think people actually get on uc

They seem to think they get thousands each month. Because The Mirror said it was true.

I like to think we live in a time and place where every child should indeed fucking well be entitled to a rare day out.

Shame on any bitter, ashen-hearted person who begrudges a child having a nice day that they can look back on in years to come with happy memories.

It doesn’t have to be a rare day out for kids who’s parents are on benefits at that price though, whereas for everyone else it would have to be a very rare trip indeed.

Like a large number of UC claimants then, glad you agree it’s a good idea

To be honest, I’m sure the majority of UC claimants will be fairly ambivalent, unless they live in London. From my city, for a mother and two DCs to get to London and back by train would cost about £240. Even at £1, these day trips will still be out of reach for most on UC in the UK.

Yes I agree. I’ve never used them - we have nothing in our area.

Same

Completely get it! I work my arse off all year round with just 5 weeks annual leave and I cannot afford a £70 trip to the zoo or any other attraction weekly in the holidays. Yet if you don’t work, and sit on your arse all day, you get £1 tickets. Insane how people on benefits are treated like this.

Its crazy my first uc payment i got was £43 for the month I get more now due to significant decline in health but still not thousands or even close to 1 thousand.

Wolmando · 10/04/2026 20:33

So you are probably best to keep getting UC if you have kids, then you can have loads of very cheap days out at expensive places, also lots of other perks as well.

But it doesn’t matter if it’s not nearly enough to pay your rent, or that you’re eating dust. You can go to London Zoo for a pound!! Do you not realise how lucky you are??

Guess what im on uc and work my arse of all year to and can't afford to go to any of these attractions either. Does that make you feel better

Yes, because we all know the biggest living expense isn’t housing, or utilities, or food, clothes or transport. It’s DAYS OUT! Of course we’d all be far better off on two shillings and sixpence a week if we were to get free days out on top!

God not another thread about this.

Perks?
If you are entitled to these "perks", you are not in a great position to begin with.

Why not leave your job and go on UC.

What perks being able to get into London zoo for a £1 when you live the otherside of the country

Midnights68 · 10/04/2026 20:41

I don’t have a problem with benefits claimants getting subsidised entry, but I do have a problem with attractions and services subsidising initiatives like this with increased costs for people who are paying full whack.

It’s similar with nurseries - the funded hours scheme is underfunded by the government, so the handful of people who actually pay for childcare have to be charged even more. And with care homes - the payers are charged more to subsidise the non-payers because the system for non-payers is underfunded by the government. So the payers are subsidising the state really.

You mean if there weren’t so many jealous, nasty bastards who can’t stand the thought of poor children receiving CHARITY, there wouldn’t be the threads.

How are there people on this thread that are in jobs well paid enough that they don’t need any assistance from the state, but that can’t grasp the simple concept that UC is not an out of work benefit.

Oh you’ll be thrilled there’s no evidence that costs have increased for anyone else to cover this then.
