Well Paid Job - AIBU to hang on for as long as possible?

I started a new job around 6 months ago. The pay is incredible. The hours and working culture are horrific. It’s sink or swim and I’m sinking like a lead weight. I do have additional needs that are not being met.

They have extended my probation by 3 months for quite frankly, spurious reasons. I just don’t fit is more the real reason.

I can’t see myself here long term even if I passed probation. Is it unreasonable to hang on as long as I can for the money and experience?

If you are able to hang in there and want to, why not. I’ve had to do the same before but that was because I was in another country and it wasn’t easy to leave, but the money was my focus.

If you CAN hang on and your mental health is ok, keep going but start looking.

It sounds like you are miserable there, and by extending your probation they are signalling they aren't happy too.
I would stick it out for now and put the additional money earned in a pot to tide you over when this job ends. Also be looking for other jobs. I don't think I'd accept a permanent position at the end of the probation as being miserable at work is not worth the extra money, it will do a number on your self esteem and stress levels.

This. Tell yourself you will leave as soon as you have a good alternative.

I think it depends. Can you go in, do you work and leave each night without worrying about it? If so then absolutely rinse them for what you can!! If you’re mental health is being affected, then it’s no worth it. I went from a good job in London to stacking shelves in Sainsbury’s until I could find something better (which I did) as I just couldn’t work in that awful toxic culture anymore. Money isn’t always worth it!

Claudiasfringebenefits · 10/04/2026 08:56

I think it depends on whether you can easily get another job if /when you leave this.
If you can’t and can’t afford not to be working I’d be looking for something else.

Personally I’d probably want to have the end in sight!

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 10/04/2026 17:10

Well you need to do both. Stay until you find another job or they get rid of you whichever is first. Don’t walk away if you can help it without something to go to… job market is horrific.

Bilbobagginsbollox · 10/04/2026 17:12

I would stick it out for as long as possible but start looking for a new job.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 10/04/2026 17:17

Can you afford to be without a job when fired? If not then start applying for jobs now

ProfessorofCunning · 10/04/2026 17:18

Hold on if you can, and ignore the culture as much as you can. Jobs are out there, but the market is horrible unless you want care, shop or delivery work . DH was made redundant over a year ago, and still hasn’t found a decent full time job. He looked out of his field after 6 months and is currently working 24hrs for a supermarket. Nothing wrong with this, I also work in a convenience store and am a cleaner, but it’s not his career or what he’s trained years for. He’s still looking, but he’s happy enough as at least we can just about cover bills.

Morepositivemum · 10/04/2026 17:21

I’d say bank as much money as you can, so really cut back expenses as much as possible while searching. Best of luck op🤞

Credittocress · 10/04/2026 17:21

If you are sinking in the role how can them extending your probation spurious?

id hang on, but be applying for new jobs like crazy because it doesn’t sound like you’ll be there for much longer

Life's too short to spend your working days being miserable. Money isn't the be all and end all.
Make a plan and leave the arseholes behind in your dust.
