AIBU to worry about elderly relative travelling to Eire without insurance?

Elderly relative (mid 80s) with complex health problems - heart, blood pressure, very recent stroke. All being well managed through complex cocktail of medications and they are actually brighter than they have been for ages.

Determined to accompany their friends on a 5 day coach trip to Dublin and Cork. Insurance not looking possible though we will keep trying.

Family feel strongly that they should go and the benefits outweigh the risks. They will be covered for any hospital treatment while they are there.

So the risks are basically their friends having to fend any initial health problems , one of us having to fly out to support them if there is any serious issue, managing a long stay in a hospital outside the UK and at the worst repatriation.

I feel it's endearingly optimistic but a bit bonkers. Everyone eise thinks it's their life so their decision. Obviously we can't stop them but we could try to persuade them if we thought it was really unwise.

Any thoughts?

YABU - YOLO, encourage them to go for it
YANBU - could end in (expensive) tears

Presumably you then have to arrange a funeral etc in another country for your relative? Is that ideal? How do you get buried or cremated if you're not a citizen of that country, I dont know what the rules are to be honest

And repatriation isnt just for dead people, you may be in a coma or cant take a usual normal flight so have to have medical transport.

As long as there is a death cert, local undertakers handle the cremation, and then you take the ashes back to the UK to dispose of according to the wishes of the deceased or your own best judgment.

I put a reply, but cannot find it! So apologies if it's already been seen. My late cousin went away for her 80th birthday, paid for by the kids. She had multiple health issues, including cancer and got insurance with the Post office. She moaned about the cost... but actually fell and broke her hip.. one of her daughters said the re pat cost would have broken them. I worked with a paramedic, who did Air Ambulance re pats, and abroad,I can't remember the costings, but it was about 4 times what people thought.

So what's so bad about that?

OP misunderstood the meaning of Eire, thinking it meant Southern Ireland

Nobody’s going to pass this exam if they don’t buckle down and read the thread.

There’s no place called Southern Ireland @WednesdaysChild73. It’s Ireland. Even the southern part of the country is known as the south of Ireland, not Southern Ireland.
It is confusing because people think if there’s a Northern Ireland the rest of the island is Southern Ireland, but that’s not in fact the case.

The most northerly part of the island is in the republic, not in Northern Ireland.

There are also historical reasons why the name is best avoided (along with Eire), but mostly the issue is it’s simply the wrong name.

As OP has moved on I don’t think I’m derailing at this point, just explaining.

So why did you even bother to reply? 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Galtymore · 12/04/2026 15:12

I replied in an effort to rectify any misconceptions people may have about the name of the country.

You’re being needlessly nasty. I think you’ve totally misunderstood what OP was actually asking. It was nothing to do with the quality of medical services available in Ireland.

I really wish people would take the time to read a thread, or at least an OP’s posts, if they’re going to comment.

Yawn

Galtymore · 12/04/2026 15:31

And I know you’re referring to the protests too @Sufferingjaysus, but the OP is not in Ireland now, and I’m sure she’s had enough of this type of accusation already.

Sufferingjaysus · 12/04/2026 16:30

Galtymore, it was a joke (trying to lighten the mood….).

Okay, my apologies so. Hard to judge tone on threads sometimes and there were a couple of similar comments already which definitely weren’t jokes.

Galtymore · 12/04/2026 16:35

Ok, just read your last comment. I take back the apologies.

Clearly. I thought you were being sarcastic.
