Are hair extensions considered a luxury?

I know this might sound trivial but would you consider hair extensions a luxury? I've had them for years as I've got such rubbish hair myself. Thinking of cutting down on some expenses though as everything is getting more and more pricey and this would save £85 every 6 weeks (maintenance) but then I feel self conscious with out them!
Aibu- loose the extensions, waste of money
Yanbu- worth it for the confidence

Don't extensions damage or weaken your actual hair over time? You might be better if going cold turkey and throwing some of that budget at good products

They don't seem to have damaged mine luckily - I think you've got to be really careful and take great care of them. I think I might do that - get some really good shampoo and supplements!

I actually think that if I had very sparse hair that extensions or a wig etc would be a necessity and not a luxury.

I think they look silly and you can always tell when someone has them in, no matter how much thet pay you can still notice them.

It's true, they often look very blunt and too thick. When styled correctly they look nice though

Wow your niece is very skilled - I wouldn't dare attempt this!
I've got tape extensions

She is, but its her partner who does them and he's a plasterer so I think its easy.😂
I don't know about tape ones though.

Pyjamatimenow · 09/04/2026 22:35

My extensions and colour costs me 160 every six weeks. Replacing the hair is about 600 per year. It’s definitely a luxury but I wouldn’t give them up. My hair is very thin otherwise. I would feel bald

I agree with this.

If you want to go from normal to fab - luxury

If your hair is very sparse so you feel self conscious...wig or extensions could be seen as an essential.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 09/04/2026 22:47

Of course they are a luxury.

Anything hair related (except perhaps shampoo) is a luxury, But that’s fine - get them done if it makes you feel better though, that’s what they are there for!

How? It isn’t essential to have great hair.

It may be important to someone’s self esteem but that’s not the same. I think OP should go for it though

RodJaneandBungle · 09/04/2026 23:09

Lots of judgement - if they work out at £15 a week maybe OP doesn’t have other things - 3 coffees a week - 2 glasses of wine - loads of ways she’d be spending the money in other ways. If they make you feel good cut back on smthg else OP. Obvs if money is v tight then you know your answer I guess.

No judgement. OP asked if they were a luxury and they are. But if she wants it she should go for it.

That's what I said...it's not essential to have great hair.

It might be essential to some to have half decent hair. Which they might not have naturally.

i mean it isn’t one of life’s essentials for anyone. It is a luxury.

But it doesn’t matter what you label it, if someone wants it and can afford it, why not!

RodJaneandBungle · 09/04/2026 23:35

Can’t believe how many voted Yabu! Ithink hair is Massive &.can carry all
lesser things whilst making you also look fab. I think is more of a therapy than clothes or nails for eg. So v hard to give up naturally. I long for good hair like pre memo & now a dull mess. The feeling I get coming out is 🍖 worth it for that alone so I’d be staying out Op.

It is a shame that people feel this way though, societal pressure sucks.

Tipstery · 10/04/2026 00:26

No, I think hair extensions are essential, up there with food, water, and gin.

No it’s not social pressure - I colour my hair 3 x a year - due to chronic health conditions, limited finances & the consequences of menopause on my hair & cancer. If I could afford to go more I would. It literally gives me a new lease of life & is the biggest tonic for how I feel overall. My life is locked down in many ways due to chronic health conditions & this is one treat that I have in place of so many others, that I used to take for granted before chronic ill health.
If I could afford to get it done more I would. Hence my encouragement to OP to continue if it makes her feel good & save that glass of wine or coffee habit in its place. I’m sure you spend on things that are not strictly essential for your survival?
I think women assuming that engaging in any kind of self care are doing it to conform to beauty standards is misjudged & another form of women hating on eachother. We literally can’t win.

PollyBell · 10/04/2026 08:24

Of course it is

Merseymum1980 · 10/04/2026 08:30

Its all relative honey. If you can afford them and they make you feel great carry on.
Try also taking high strength vitamin d its really helped my hair thickness.
Some people get manicures or smoke or lashes or drink or whatever.
In the grand scheme providing everything is met financially you do you x

clearlyy · 10/04/2026 08:31

Definitely. They’re so expensive for good ones.

Matildahoney · 10/04/2026 08:32

If hair extensions are done well they're not noticeable, I've met various hairdressers (out and about not in salons) who never realised I had extensions until it was mentioned.

I had mine out in lockdown and have been considering having them back in ever since as I hate my hair without it, the only thing really stopping me is my boisterous toddler who will probably rip them out!

MidnightMeltdown · 09/04/2026 20:04

Of course it’s a luxury! £85 on hair every 6 weeks is a huge amount.

The fact that it’s a luxury doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s a waste of money though, that’s a different question.

This.

Agree, I have thin, rubbish hair, I think extensions would look awful and obvious but if there were a way to make them look ok, I’d do it in an instant and consider it money well spent.

ThePoshUns · 10/04/2026 08:41

Agree that they are a luxury but feeling good about your hair gives you confidence. People notice others hair and teeth ( well I do), so for me it’s worth spending money on. I’d try and cut back in areas that aren’t as important to you.
Biotin is supposed to be good for hair and nails.

Macaroni46 · 10/04/2026 08:42

Could you extend the time between appointments? So get the refit every 8 or 9 weeks instead of after 6?
I too have thin hair and regular cuts and colour really help elevate what it looks like. I manage the cost by going every 8-9 weeks and I don’t have nails or lashes etc

Crofthead · 10/04/2026 08:44

You mean you thought they might be essentials?
