Has anyone decided against upsizing in order to spend more money on holidays etc?

As above really. We could really do with extra space, but could ‘make do’ with what we’ve got, and would have the benefit of more disposable income.

Has anyone been in a similar position, and regretted not making the move? Or had a successful experience..

We are considering downsizing!!!

We extended our house (twice - 1 room and a bathroom on ground floor, and into the attic) to get extra space. Much cheaper than selling and buying - and we got to keep our great location, services, still have a garden, and, most importantly, great neighbours.

We’re now in the house 24 years…and have had lovely holidays too because we weren’t over extended. We had enough space for DC, and to add an au pair for a few years when needed, to have a home office long before COVID, and to be flexible about what we needed the house to be at different stages.

We've decided to stay in the smaller house for as long as we possibly can. Id much rather have the disposable income, holidays and be able to work less hours whilst the children are younger.

We up sized (sort of, we actually lost a bedroom but gained much more space downstairs). It's just a much lovelier house, in a nicer location. We significantly added to the mortgage, and it does worry me sometimes. We had the extra money coming in ,to justify the mortgage, and felt it was better invested in property than spent on holidays (as amazing as that would have been). We still holiday of course, but the prices of doing something more exotic or further away are just crazy!
If house prices increase by 50% over the next decade then we would have made an extra £300k.
We plan to size back down when we need to help the children with property.

I had the option of moving somewhere larger about 15 years ago. After a lot of soul searching I concluded I was trying to keep up with some kind of perceived "model" of what it meant to be a grown up. Opted to stay where I am, paid off the mortgage within 10 years of taking it out. Spend it on holidays and a nice life. I enjoy the financial freedom, as well as not having to clean so many rooms and toilets...
