IABU but I do not like outside

I do not like being outside.

It has taken me a while to admit this to myself as it feels like a moral failing in many ways.

I love looking at the outside. At beautiful views, or when I wake up in the morning and take in the birds singing and the fields and the blossom. It’s beautiful. But actually in it? When it’s either too chilly or hot, and you don’t get to sit down, and it’s, you know, a bit too outsidey. Oh and bugs, and itchy grass.

I would far rather a day indoors contained.

Unfortunately I have young children. I have to hide the fact I hate garden play and parks and walks, for their benefit. But given the choice give me a rainy day ‘oh what a shame!’ Soft play it is!

Im the same. Im so annoyed its suddenly blazing hot a few days into spring 😥 hate it I do!!!

CDTC · 07/04/2026 15:29

I'm outsidey, I'm not outdoorsy. I like paths, walking around a lake with somewhere I can get a coffee etc. unfortunately my husband and kids are extremely outdoorsy people and I have to suffer the 10 mile hikes, the endless layers of fleece and waterproofs, sitting where there is endless rabbit droppings, all the wind and the mud, don't get me started on the mud. I'm fitter for it and I go without complaint but my god do I just want to stay at home and lounge.

TremendousThirst · 07/04/2026 15:34

I like outside in moderate doses, but it’s not a moral failure not to prefer it! Humans built inside for a reason! Then we invented sofas, lighting, climate control and running water - all superb!

mrsCtheRed · 07/04/2026 15:35

I'm with you 100%
I'm always cold outdoors, unless it's in the high 20's, but when it is hot, I then get terrible hay-fever 😫

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/04/2026 15:39

Places where you have a museum and kids stuff and outside would probably suit you best. Horniman museum in south London is inside but has lovely gardens, nice cafe, a conservatory where you can have tea and they’re adding a new cafe and redoing the gardens. Young and older kids love it.

Dinosuarlady2026 · 07/04/2026 10:26

I was 100% with you till I saw your comment about soft plays, I find those places hell on earth 😂

Most sane people find them hell on earth! I don’t even have kids but have taken nephews to them. Never again 🤣

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/04/2026 15:44

Jen Bristow comedian has insta videos talking about her kids in playgrounds. She wonders why there’s no shed there selling neat gin! Love a playground with a cafe though. Even better if it serves booze. No I’m not an alkie!

CandidRaven · 07/04/2026 16:05

I am the same, even as a child I preferred to be inside doing my crafts and watching my favourite film rather than play out in parks and in the garden, I always hated when it was suggested I play in the garden my dad bought a swing set and a slide for it but it was only my sister who used them as she was always wanting to be outside and would stay out for hours but with me I just didn't enjoy it at all and liked my own company which hasn't changed as I've got older

Buffysoldersister · 07/04/2026 16:45

I love the outdoors and I get cabin fever from being inside too long. Hiking, climbing, swimming, bike rides all fab. I even quite like playgrounds. But I do have a big issue with people who insist on doing indoorsy things outdoors. Like a few others have said, there's nothing worse than an outdoor meal, it's so much faff, the food goes cold, wind blows everything over on the table, wasps get in your food. See also going to 'sit outside' because it's 'so nice' but you need a blanket and 20 layers of clothing and/or sunglasses/parasols/sun cream etc etc. I have a friend who bought a projector and had a weird fad of wanting to watch tv outside - just no!

idonotlikebeingoutside · 07/04/2026 10:31

I always wonder what the soft play hate is on here.

So they are loud yeah but so are most places with little kids.

I get to
sit down
if I go with a friend talk to them
if I’m alone browse my phone
the kids play
it isn’t generally that expensive

maybe I am missing something

No phobia of outside. Given the choice I’d rather be inside though.

I always enjoyed taking my kids to soft play as well as outside, but we did have a couple of sickness episodes after soft play, they are not always the cleanest. Oh the joy when we arrived at one one time and it had just had its annual (annual!!) deep clean/disinfect - nothing was sticky!
I get not liking outside, but find it strange to still like soft play!
However you do you as long as you don’t keep your kids inside as well - they need fresh air, light and exercise!! Good luck!! And believe me it doesn’t last long - get them a screen aged 8 and you’ll never have to bother with taking them outside or finding an activity for them again (being facetious here obvs but it is also actually true.) Come age 10 or 11 they lose all interest in you so while I know everyone says it, make the most of these times as they are over really fast…

kurotora · 08/04/2026 11:33

I’m glad someone else can relate. I kind of like the outside in theory and I love views, nature etc. But I’m hugely arachnophobic and it just tortures me when I’m out sitting in a garden. And I also have such poor temperature regulation due to my ill health that I get too hot or too cold so quickly. I’m disabled and can’t enjoy nature walks. I have anxiety. Then I’ve got hayfever on top!

That said, I also hate just sitting around the house so I’m overall a bit faulty 😬

mjf981 · 08/04/2026 11:40

I don't understand this at all! Being outside in nature, no matter the weather, always lifts my spirits and makes me feel more normal/grounded/happy. If I'm stuck inside too long I almost feel claustrophobic.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/04/2026 11:42

YANBU.

People wouldn’t spend £££ on just the right curtains if outside was anything special.

Interior design is a massive industry for a good reason.

PinkLeopard8 · 08/04/2026 12:12

No you aren't unreasonable for having a preference, especially because you recognise that it's important for your childrens physical and mental health, so I assume you probably won't ever share your preference with them, or at least not until they are adults.
One of my daughters is the same. Unfortunately she is only 13, but she has always been like it, she just genuinely doesn't like it much outside, she can appreciate that it's beautiful, but like you described finds the sensory elements quite intolerable.
I have to encourage her to take walks and get that outdoor time.
But we like what we like.

Paramaribo2025 · 08/04/2026 12:14

I have to say I'm the same.
I wish I wasn't.

I hate the wind. It makes my eyes water and my hair goes everyplace.

I run hot and have a higher body temperature than average.
Therefore, insects won't leave me alone.

I have to stay out of the sun. I can't get sunburnt again because I got sunburnt loads when I was young.

I get hot and sweaty very quickly. Sitting out under the sun makes it much worse.

I love the idea of being outside but I'm mostly inside.
I find it easier to be outside in the winter than summer.

Astra53 · 08/04/2026 12:24

@idonotlikebeingoutside

100% with you on this. I love sitting indoors looking out. Outside is great in principle but, once there, becomes too hot/cold, wet/dry, windy/uncomfortable. In the summer it inevitably involves a warm picnic or smelly barbecue, and me becoming a walking buffet for every single insect within a 10 mile radius!

It don't mind walking now and then, preferably by the sea.

MaJoady · 08/04/2026 12:26

idonotlikebeingoutside · 07/04/2026 11:50

So then it’s busy with walkers and dogs and dog shit and stressing over kids falling in and drowning and I mean … what is there to DO? Yes, it’s very pretty but beyond that it just isn’t really very interesting.

If I was alone then maybe a book but then you have the sun in your eyes and bugs crawling over the pages.

@Monty36 I’m not sure how you’ve deduced I don’t go out with my children. I’ve felt like I haven’t been inside at all this holiday! I did go to the cinema last Monday but other than that it’s been countless national trust Easter trails and playgrounds and so on.

The sun makes me frowny and squinty too.

Quite looking forward to the predicted rain on Thursday.

Are you the sort of person who always has to do something? Have a plan to action?!

If so, then just being outside probably doesn't suit you. But then you probably aren't ever just being indoors either!

For me just being outdoors is an exercise in switching off from the modern need to always be doing something. I find it harder indoors as all the jobs are staring me in the face.

firstofallimadelight · 08/04/2026 12:34

So do you hate sitting in the sunshine in beer garden having a drink with friends?
sunbathing by a pool/ at the beach?
laying on the grass or a sun lounger with a good book?
sledding/skiing?
picnics?

Helpfullnelly · 08/04/2026 13:01

KevinsSignatureShortdeads · 07/04/2026 10:31

I’m similar to an extent; the conditions have to be perfect or else I just find it a bit irritating being outside.

I find summer difficult because as soon as there’s even a hint of sun, everyone insists on sitting outdoors to eat etc and I can’t stand it. It’ll be 17 degrees, windy AF, napkins flying everywhere…such a joy.

This, i wont eat outside by choice. On occasion, to be sociable i do, but only in true heat, like in my own garden in Spain

MightyDandelionEsq · 08/04/2026 13:21

Exactly the same. Lots of garden play and walks at the moment and I absolutely hate it but have to hide it for them. If I didn’t have kids, I’d return to my former life where I barely went outside. Even as a child, I hated outdoor play.

MightyDandelionEsq · 08/04/2026 13:26

u3ername · 07/04/2026 12:51

It sounds like your main issue is planning for and managing children outside. It’s work. But lazy is always harder than work in the long term. I’m not going to go into details as to why in these circumstances as you’ve already dismissed plenty of good advice.

Many people stay ‘sat on their arse’ indoors looking at their phone. You shouldn’t be needing validation as it’s rather common in the western world.
But you get something from this thread?

She’s literally said she puts her own feelings asides and plans activities outdoors for her kids.

We’re all allowed preferences and I’d actually counter your point that indoor activities take far more work in my experience then letting your kids loose in the garden or going on a walk.

Cambridgedropout · 08/04/2026 14:19

I think this is a really unhealthy way to live OP.

Just out of interest, are you overweight?

Runnersandtoms · 08/04/2026 14:23

I am the opposite, I hate sitting indoors on a sunny day. My kids (teens) would happily stay indoors all the time but I make them gobiut for their own good!

MightyDandelionEsq · 08/04/2026 14:26

Wow the amount of posters who just can’t compute that some of us don’t enjoy being outside…

You are welcome to counter as much as you wish. Op said she prefers indoor soft plays because she can sit and scroll through her phone.
