AIBU to absolutely LOATHE pop-ups like this over the product photos when I'm trying to shop?

"200 people looked at this in the past 24 hours".

I. DON'T. CARE.

There's no redeeming quality to it. I hate them and I hate having to wait for the sodding thing to flash out so I can see the product.

I understand the idea is to create a scarcity feeling, but it's just annoying. Also who wants to have something that everyone else has?

M&S actually has them on the thumbnails now too, which means it covers most of the shoes you're meant to have a preview for.

Rant over.

All it communicates to me is that 200 people looked at it, but didn't judge it good enough to buy because they're all still available. I don't really understand why they think it would genuinely work on anyone - it is just annoying!

EmpressaurusKitty · 07/04/2026 09:09

Yes. And even more annoying when you have to get past how many people are interested, other items people bought with this one & the special offers before reaching the product description, which is the most useful bit.

Crikeyalmightey · 07/04/2026 09:22

I don't believe them. Think it's just another marketing ploy.
The ones on Amazon (other customers also bought) with totally random and unconnected items make me lol. Who cares!

MrThorpeHazell · 07/04/2026 09:24

Agreed. Who. Gives. A. Monkeys?

Because it does work.

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 07/04/2026 09:26

I agree OP, I hate it - it actually makes me not want to buy the thing.

I wish there was a way to turn it iff but it seems almost every website has it now.

I’m not sure if they think it will encourage people to buy something quickly before it’s gone - fear of missing out etc. However for me it’s the total opposite - it makes them sound desperate, and I hate being pressured into buying something.

OvernightBloats · 07/04/2026 09:29

It's manipulative. Feels very calculating when companies do this. Of course they want sales but I don't want to feel as though they are playing mind games with me.

MamaBobo · 07/04/2026 09:30

Drives me nuts. I don’t shop online for clothes much but holiday companies do it too and I really don’t care if Clarabel in Clapham has just booked a cottage in Cumbria. Just slows down the site and gets in the way. It certainly doesn’t make me think “damn…I must book right this now in case every single cottage is booked up in the next 30 seconds”.

SilverPink · 07/04/2026 09:34

It’s manipulative. EBay used to do it, probably still do, 38 people are watching this, ie if you don’t buy/bid now you’ll lose out.

BikeShmike · 07/04/2026 09:37

eBay have always done it and I think that's ok especially if there's only one of the item which is usually the case.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 07/04/2026 09:40

I think it's some kind of psychological ploy to create a scarcity reaction - so you worry that the item might sell out if you don't buy it immediately. All these '30 people have this in their basket' nonsense that tries to make you feel you have to buy NOW.

Offcom · 07/04/2026 09:48

User experience is such a misnomer isn’t it.

A recent thing on retail apps seems to be deliberately putting the back-to-search button practically on top of the enlarge image button so you’re suddenly looking even closer at some trousers you know you don’t want cos they’re 48% polyester. Thanks everyone, great job, well done!

deeahgwitch · 07/04/2026 09:52

M&S do it. It’s very annoying.
As is the posing of models at strange angles where you can’t actually see the full length of the clothing you are thinking of buying, front and back. It’s like the photographer wants to show off his/her creativity rather than the clothes that are being sold. Daft 🙄

TheeNotoriousPIG · 07/04/2026 09:58

I am another one who goes, "I DON'T CARE!" when attempting to shop online... mainly because it spares me from venturing into the nearest city (if I can't get it in the nearest town) and trying to cram the contents of B&Q into a Toyota Aygo.

Loppidoodle · 07/04/2026 10:08

Yes. Since I got onto the shop's website, I've already had to close pop-ups asking me to accept cookies, and pop-ups asking me to enter my email address for a mailing list. And now here's another pop-up obscuring the screen, with information about how many people have looked at it? Good luck to them.. How did they even manage to look at it past all the pop-ups?

Is it really in the shop's interests to prevent me from even seeing the things they're trying to sell? I've actually closed the website window in disgust a couple of times now and given up. It's not worth it. Fuck off with your pop-ups.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 07/04/2026 10:11

My pet hate is a pop-up asking me to subscribe to a newsletter or service covering the content I'm trying to read. Just mining accidental clicks as clearly you need to read the content before you decide to sign up, or not.

IceBrownie · 07/04/2026 10:12

Why?
You can't even preview them properly.

Its really annoying, plus there is hardly going to be any scarcity these days.

Anything that sells well there is an over supply. You just have to see everything that is on sale after major holidays. Everyone knows theyre are not going to miss out cause it would be back in stock pretty quickly

I mean youre argos not gucci of whatever

squashyhat · 07/04/2026 10:17

Same with holiday and airline sites. Xxx people have booked this hotel in the last 3 minutes and xx more are looking at it RIGHT NOW! Only 2 flights left at this price! Only 3 rooms left at this price! All designed to make you panic and book/buy before you have thought it through properly. Angry

UninitendedShark · 07/04/2026 10:19

Thank you for saying this, it drives me insane.

CoffeeCantata · 07/04/2026 10:34

Telling me that millions of others are buying it would put me right off!

I like to fantasise that I've got original, individual taste.....😂so they've got that bit of buyer psychology completely wrong!

winnieanddaisy · 07/04/2026 10:34

I hate these pop ups too , but I especially hate the ones telling you to download their App too . This makes me sooo mad that I stop browsing and go to another site . I have never bought anything from Temu or even browsed their site as I refused to be blackmailed into downloading the App .

HamAlive · 08/04/2026 09:38

This irritates me so much! And yes I have lots of much bigger things to worry about but this still winds me up. You go on to the website and have to tap away the cookies pop up, then there's a "sign up and get a discount" pop up, then if you're really lucky there may be a "sale" pop up. Then you get on to the item and you're met with "249484 people looked at this recently" which takes ages to disappear, and also sometimes "0 people bought this recently". Just make it stop, please! It activates something in me that then doesn't want to buy it!

TheGoldenOwl · 08/04/2026 09:41

Can we also include this:

navigates to website

IMMEDIATELY before you have even have the chance to click anything a big pop up saying subscribe!!!!! Subscribe to our newsletter!!

Calm down, let me look at what you're about first!

JoeSikoraTommysStory · 08/04/2026 09:47

Very do this but to be fair there usually is low stock and you can also use the (x) to remove it.
Some other websites/apps are notorious for it and no getting rid of it either 🫤
