AIBU to ask if emergency childcare counts as a sick day?

So my grandparent has had a fall today and now my mum cannot provide childcare whilst I work tomorrow. I am really worried about calling work and explaining this. Is this classed as a sick day?

No, because YOU are not sick.

ohyesido · 06/04/2026 21:40

You won’t be paid for the day if it’s parent leave

Bunnybigears · 06/04/2026 21:41

No it's classed as unpaid dependants leave. Depending on your workplace they may let you put it in as a holiday so you still get paid. Or work the time back another time of you have Flexi time etc

No, you're not sick, so wouldn't be classed as that unless you tell them you're unwell. You have a statutory right to unpaid emergency leave to look after dependants. If you can't afford to have unpaid leave and the company gives no paid provision for emergency childcare but does offer occupational sick pay, then you could pretend you're sick for the day as it'd be financially beneficial.

Check with your HR dept, where I work we can take up to five days carers leave per year. We used to use these days if kids were sick when they were little. Now I used them for caring for elderly parent eg hospital appt. This may not be the case where you work, but worth asking!

MightyFlow · 06/04/2026 21:45

No it's not a sick day. Some employers give paid dependants/carers leave - you need to check your employer's policy.

No it should be classed as dependents leave. It won't go towards your sick leave total, but it may need to be unpaid. Whether your workplace allows paid dependents leave or whether it is unpaid is up to them.

Amethystanddiamonds · 06/04/2026 21:54

Emergency carers leave, annual leave or unpaid leave (depending what you've got left) but not sick leave where I work.

Imanexcellentdrivercharliebabbit · 06/04/2026 21:56

Chuck a sickie
we’ve all had to do it with caring responsibilities sadly…

Pinkflamingo10 · 06/04/2026 22:01

No it’s parental leave. Usually unpaid but I think this is at employers discretion

Spaghettea · 06/04/2026 22:03

No. Take it as unpaid emergency leave, or whatever it's called.

Mobysdick · 06/04/2026 22:16

You have a statutory right to emergency unpaid dependents leave. This shouldn’t be confused with parental leave (which needs 21 days notice and can be postponed but not declined) and it’s for emergencies so have a plan B if you need more consecutive days. You are not sick so don’t do that, check your sickness policy and triggers they can manage your absence if it’s high so don’t waste sick days when you can take EDL.

canuckup · 06/04/2026 22:18

Yes

ColdinHTK · 06/04/2026 22:33

It’s emergency carers leave or annual leave.
It would only be sick leave if YOU declare you’re unwell, and it’s never a good idea to do this as if you then did have further sick time in the near future you could trigger sickness absence monitoring

SueKeeper · 06/04/2026 22:34

It's obviously not sick leave, as that would mean that you were off sick if any of the following were sick : you, child, parent, grandparent. That would be a bit much, take the right leave, it's better to be honest.

This. I'd authorise annual leave or unpaid special leave if I was your manager. You're not I'll so it's not sick leave

tryandbepositive · 06/04/2026 22:48

Depends what your work rules are. We have up to 5 days paid dependents leave we can use for such things

confusedlots · 06/04/2026 22:52

We get 3 days paid carers leave each year for this purpose. Kids sick and can’t go to school, childcare arrangements fallen through at the last minute etc. After that we can take it as annual leave or unpaid leave or if we just need a few hours off in the morning to sort out other arrangements, we can make the time up.

Kattya · 06/04/2026 22:53

Depends where you work. In the nhs it would be a carers leave day

No. 'We' haven't. Most of us are grown ups and act professionally and responsibly. Throwing a sickie is classed as fraud and gross misconduct. Rightly, she could be fired for this. Pretty stupid advice.

professionalhomebody · 06/04/2026 23:28

You’d either take a holiday at my place, or it’d be unpaid.
