Where do you keep 'stuff' in your house?

Where do you keep letters, trinkets, etc in your house? How do people keep their houses clutter free?

I’m not really a minimalist person so we have quite a bit on display, but I have things like letters, diaries, memory type stuff boxed up in plastic boxes in the loft.

Vconcerned1 · 05/04/2026 17:50

Some are in a bookcase and some are in storage/the loft.

Littletreefrog · 05/04/2026 17:51

In a box in the loft or if it's something nice I want on display on a shelf in the living room.

Letters go in the letter section of a cupboard.

what do you mean by trinkets??

Ineedanewsofa · 05/04/2026 17:56

We keep minimal paperwork now, most banking, insurance etc has moved online. Any paperwork we do need is stored in box files in DHs office.
We each have a memory box with old pictures etc in
We don’t have trinkets and ornaments really, we do collect fridge magnets from holidays so they are all on the fridge.
Pictures hang on the walls rather than being is standing frames
Clothes and bags in wardrobes and drawers, shoes in the shoe cupboard, coats in the porch or the utility room.
We don’t have a useable loft space so xmas decorations are all boxed up under beds (all ottoman beds for storage).
That’s about it really, what else is there?

Paisleybuddy · 05/04/2026 17:56

Letters in a letter rack then filed away or shredddd. Tbh we don’t get that many.
House keys and car keys etc are on key hooks
Sentimental things are boxed and in the loft.
By trinkets you mean ornaments some are in wall mounted display cabinets, some on the mantlepiece and some on shelves in the office. Special photos are on the wall in the family room.

Fucking everywhere.

ADHD piles all over.

Allonthesametrain · 05/04/2026 17:57

Drawers bursting at the seams with a big pile of new stuff on kitchen counter!

Caspianberg · 05/04/2026 17:59

I don’t think I have any letters or trinkets.
I mean bill letters get paid and binned or filed away for taxes. I don’t have trinkets or nick naks

whirlyhead · 05/04/2026 18:01

I throw them away. My mother gave me my birth announcement recently from the paper. Straight in the bin! I do not like clutter and I don’t want to die with loads of crap around me that someone else has to throw away.

ComtesseDeSpair · 05/04/2026 18:02

Big stuff is in the loft. Paperwork that I need to keep I scan and file digitally, or if hard copies have to be kept it all generally fits in a folder in my desk drawer. I suppose we don’t really have a lot of “stuff” that needs to be stored: we display stuff like artwork and books but don’t have knickknacks and we’ve both previously moved house frequently enough that clear outs were a way of life and we don’t have e.g. a decade’s worth of junk in cupboards that hasn’t been seen since it first went into the cupboards.

BMW6 · 05/04/2026 18:07

I'm 68 and my DH died a year ago. Apart from a few letters from him I've burned/binned/donated loads of Stuff.
All last year I had a rule that if I was going out I had to take at least 1 thing out permanently.

I think it's bloody marvellous and liberating!

HeddaGarbled · 05/04/2026 18:07

Old sentimental letters and similar: box on top shelf of wardrobe.

Live paperwork like tax, insurance etc, folders in cupboard in dining room.

AllaMova · 05/04/2026 18:09

My letters are sent digitally now, to help keep our recycling waste down. We have alcoves in the lounge, so we keep our books, framed photographs and a couple of trickers there.

Toiletries are stored in the bathroom, my make-up and skincare bits are stored in my dressing table drawers. The cat’s toys are stored in a basket in the lounge.

I try to minimise clutter coming into the house and regularly declutter, but I don’t think anyone is immune!

Everything has a home, but what I struggle with is putting laundry away, so our upstairs rooms look cluttered due to that. Piles of washing upstairs is my biggest downfall.

PaperMachePanda · 05/04/2026 18:13

The spare room mostly but I've started putting all my crap on Vinted and it's selling well.

Stade197 · 05/04/2026 18:15

Some of my letters are on the living room windowsill, some down the side of the microwave, some shoved in a drawer in the dining room...I will file/sort/shred them one day, honest!

isthesolution · 05/04/2026 18:17

I have a filing drawer for letters. I don’t have ‘stuff’. I shove my husbands ‘stuff’ into a deep drawer - then when he says ‘I can’t find a sheet of paper I left lying around somewhere at some point’ I direct him to the shit drawer.

EmbarrassmentLovesCompany · 05/04/2026 18:21

Letters (if you mean like P60s and financial stuff) I have a plastic box at the bottom of my wardrobe, designed to hold those dividers in a filing cabinet.

Soppy stuff from DH or the kids sit on the sideboard for a few weeks, then go in the bin.

Trinkets - nope. Just dust magnets and bank account emptiers.

Sunnydayze43 · 05/04/2026 18:24

I don't like clutter lying around.
I'm not sentimental but my DPS were and as a result I had to go through boxes in cupboards, closets, drawers, and even
my DMs unused car's boot that was full of boxes of stuff she didn't want my DF to know about.
Some of the things were brand new still in the box and had never been used.
Since then I've always been mindful of keeping excess and unused things that would likely have to be gone through and disposed of by my DD someday.

Fidgety31 · 05/04/2026 18:28

In boxes in the loft or under my bed . Can’t stand clutter . Was raised by a hoarder !

WonderingWanda · 05/04/2026 18:33

Things have a place.

I don't keep letters unless it's documents that are needed and then we have file boxes with a system for things like that.

I have a cupboard in the kitchen for bits like vases and candle holders that I might get out for special occasions.

We have bookshelves for books.

A coat cupboard under the stairs for coats and shoes, with some drawers for hats, gloves and scarves. School bags and shopping bags hang in there as well. Wellies and walking boots are on a rack in the garage. Oversized coats in the wardrobe in the spare room.

Cleaning products are stored in bathroom cupboards or the utility room.

Camping stuff and tools in the garage. Xmas Dec's also on racks in the garage.

Bikes and garden tools in the shed.

We have a couple of boxes with memory bits in e.g. first babygro's / shoes / photo album stored in the loft.

Kids mostly keep their stuff in their rooms. Family games in the sideboard.

Bed linen and spare towels in the airing cupboard. Spare duvets and pillows vacuum packed and stored in the spare room ottoman bed.

Kitchen appliances, food, crockery etc all in the kitchen.

I have lots of craft stuff which is also stored in the spare room in a cupboard next to the desk I use.

The key is to regularly get rid of things you have no use for and to find storage for the things you do use.

OneBadKitty · 05/04/2026 18:50

Letters go in a drawer in my desk if they are important ones I need to keep- otherwise they are torn up and put in recycling, or put in hallway cupboard drawer if they are something I might need in a day or two.

Not 100% sure what you mean by trinkets- I'm thinking you mean small ornaments, fridge magnets and stuff like that that you are given or get on holiday? If so, I avoid collecting these unless I really like them. Little keepsakes I keep in my dressing table drawer or the hallway drawer for things that I think might have a use one day- the drawer contains novelty pens, lanyard holders, parcel receipts, take-away menus, tradespeople cards, tape measure, hand santitiser and facemasks leftover from covid times, parking permits, etc.
