AIBU to hope for work above minimum wage after self-employment?

I run a small hotel/pub. We’ve been here 15 years - self-employed. Late 40s, 2 primary age children. Partner (children’s father) has worked outside the business for the last 5 years, earns just over NMW, works full-time hours.

I’m thinking of leaving the business, and passing the property lease on. But the extraction process will be a long one if done properly (I’m thinking about 8 months).

Whilst there are many pros and cons, finances are our main concern. We will have started the leaving process before it’s realistic for me to start looking for an alternative job. I do look now and I see jobs I would apply for, but I have no idea if I would be successful. I feel out of practice. I’m also concerned by threads I read on here of people job searching for extended periods.

Am I being unreasonable to think I could find a job that pays above NMW (not lots more), and works around the kids, after being self-employed for 18 years? I’m in SW England.

YABU - the job market is really tough at the moment

YANBU - there is work available for those who are willing.

I think that being self-employed for any length of time is totally irrelevant (so long as you explain gaps on your CV).

What is relevant is what skills, qualifications, and experience you have which makes your time worth more than NMW.

Thank you, that’s reassuring.

Agree, it's about applying for the right jobs and being able to demonstrate relevant skills.

I have just employed someone who has been self employed for the last 8 years, in a job that is significantly above NMW. The fact that she had been self employed was neither a positive nor a negative in her application. What mattered is that she demonstrated to me that she had the skills and personal qualities to succeed in the job that I was recruiting for.

Plenty of jobs in schools that pay over minimum wage which means no faffing about finding holiday childcare!
