Why do conspiracy theories and being a windbag go hand in hand?

Just that really.

Why, when someone is into conspiracy theories are they also, generally speaking, lecturing windbags?

Why are they all so keen to tell you about their theories and shoehorn them into any conversation?

Or maybe some conspiracy theorists are more reticent and you just don’t realised because they don’t bend your ear about them constantly?

Because consipracy theorists believe they are so clever that they have worked something out that everyone else is too stupid to realise. They also believe that thwir genius level intelligence will save humanity, and so need to 'wake' everyone up.
Grandiosity and belief in a cause is a recipe for not shutting the f**k up 🤣

I have only met one in real life, and he was convinced that the all the lyrics of the songs by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers predicted world events.
He was very vocal about it

WilfredsPies · 04/04/2026 23:22

I’m not sure that they are really. No more than someone who has a cause, agenda or who veers significantly one way or the other politically. They’re all boring windbags but I think they get a bit more leniency because we accept their ridiculous ideas as being just different points of view, whereas conspiracies are mostly batshit, so we see the people who believe in them as equally as batshit.

Conspiracy theories are how stupid people feel clever.

I think it's sometimes a strange manifestation of anxiety and people become obsessed in relaying their beliefs as a form of imposing order (to their minds) or reassuring themselves they'll be OK (in their bunkers with 200 tolls of tolet paper and 500 cans of beans).

Other times, I think they have sone weird superiority complex and really believe that everyone else is stupid.

randomchap · 04/04/2026 23:32

Some people like to think they are better. Conspiracies that only they can figure out, and the desire to share that so called knowledge.

It's a handy red flag, avoid the bell ends

Ditto, far too many vegans, atheists and republicans.

When I want your views on diet, religion or the monarchy, rest assured you will be asked.

Abhannmor · 05/04/2026 08:45

And why do they come in platoons or clusters? It can't just be one thing. It seeps into every aspect of life eventually, gradually reducing the subject areas it is safe to talk about with that person without getting a lecture or a full blown argument.

And when one theory blows up or falls out of fashion , there is no 💡 moment. They just carry on regardless and the idea or person is just not mentioned again. Aargh !

This. They are a way for people whose lives have spiralled out of control to try to claw back some superiority and control. In my experience they tend to be people who have had problems with mental health, who have been abused or bullied or have been through some traumatic experiences. They are not robust people.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 05/04/2026 08:53

I think it's because the firm belief in some of the more outrageous conspiracy theories is linked to mental illness which also causes a lowering of inhibition. A bit like how dementia sufferers will tell you their latest racist thinkings at full volume when they never would have had such thoughts before when they were in full health.
