AIBU to collect plastic wrapping and tablet packaging for recycling?

Are you all collecting up the plastic wrapping and taking it in store to recycle.
You can do crisp packets and all sorts.
It does mean the grey bin has less stuff in it but means I have to actually go to the supermarket to get rid of it. We have home delivery for almost everything.

We're also saving up tablet packaging to take to either superdrug or boots. We now have a large bag of that. I don't go near either of those shops though.

Perhaps actually I'm just realising I don't go to shops anymore.

AIBU to not like taking recycling to shops.?

Yup I do both. Take to local Coop for plastic wrap. And save up blister packs & batteries. Take in to local shops drop off at Boots & Robert Dyas.

GrillaMilla · 04/04/2026 22:45

I take all mine to Aldi.

It's amazing/scary how much there is.
Now I know it's so much every week, I could never put it in the ordinary bin for landfill. I don't mind taking it.
I take my old batteries too.

XenoBitch · 04/04/2026 23:14

I get my weekly meds from Tesco, so take my soft plastics at the same time too. Also water filters and batteries if I remember.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 04/04/2026 23:20

I recycle whatever I can. Bread bag of scrunchy plastic, washed if necessary, to whichever supermarket i am shopping at. I normally use ocado and include with their plastic bag retakes.

Davros · 04/04/2026 23:23

I put that stuff in my recycling bin. I don’t take it to any shops

Decacaffeinatednow · 04/04/2026 23:25

Not any more. Our recycling efforts are just pathetic when you consider the catastrophic consequences of the wars in Iran and Ukraine. Piddling about with soft plastics is meaningless.

OkOkWhatsNext · 04/04/2026 23:27

DH and I were talking about this earlier in the context of the food waste recycling that councils are being required to do. We compost ours in the garden anyway, but doesn’t food waste just decay away fairly rapidly anyway? Whereas those crisps packets aren’t going anywhere fast. It feels like it’d be more beneficial if councils were required to collect and recycle soft plastics to make that easier for people to do than having to cart it off to the supermarket, and maybe work out a way of recycling the tetrapaks and plastic food containers that we can’t currently recycle.

XenoBitch · 04/04/2026 23:33

Ah yes, tetrapaks. Still not recycled where I live. But the last city I lived in, they were a kerbside collection.

Anyahyacinth · 04/04/2026 23:42

I do mine too. Seeing the tablet packs mount up makes it seem really worthwhile to me

sorryIdidntmeanto · 05/04/2026 00:12

Yes, all soft plastics get squished into a bread bag and taken to the supermarket. Very easy to do. Cat food pouches, cereal bar wrappers, crisp packets, veg packaging, cereal bags etc. You can't put things with big stickers in. We have hardly any rubbish collected now.

fluffythecat1 · 05/04/2026 00:44

Yes, soft plastics go to the Aldi recycling bin, empty tablet strips go to the recycling bin in Superdrug. A lot of plastics can be reused before recycling, e.g. bread bags used to take sandwiches to work. Almost everything that is good for the environment will also save you money.

IloveJonBonJovi · 05/04/2026 00:49

We have soft plastic recycling here. It’s cut down massively on what goes in our normal bin bags

To be clear, I'm talking about tablet blister packs. I get through A LOT with my son.

I don't go to the shops anymore either, OP. Strange, isn't it? Or is it? 🤔

Medication packs - you know, the blister cards you push the tablet through. My local chemists don't participate, so I save them up and post them to a Boots or Superdrug that does!

JustCabbaggeLooking · 05/04/2026 01:01

'Post them'?

GarlicFind · 05/04/2026 01:02

'Post them'?

😂 Yes!

I take a lot of medication. Seems churlish to send it all to landfill.

JustCabbaggeLooking · 05/04/2026 01:04

What do you mean, post them?

In the post, what's the matter with you?!

JustCabbaggeLooking · 05/04/2026 01:05

Do they have postage free packaging to send empty tablet blister packs?

GarlicFind · 05/04/2026 01:06

No. It doesn't cost much - they're bulky but very light.

MySpiritAnimalIsAPanda · 05/04/2026 01:14

Kerbside recycling where I live is useless. We collect our soft plastics and take them to Morrisons, glass goes to the bottle bank, medication packs go to boots, batteries/lightbulbs/old clothes which aren’t good enough for charity/metal waste/weee waste all go in the relevant containers at the recycling centre. We don’t have food waste collection yet either. It’s part of our daily routine now to separate everything out but I wish it was all collected from home!

Nice one 😉

Separating the plastic from the foil needs a special machine, I think the only facility in the UK is TerraCycle. But sending stuff directly to them is really expensive. I spend under a fiver every few months, posing my vast collection of empty packs to a retailer (in sandwich bags, in a box, since you're interested).
