Is this micromanaging?

I have been in my current role for 14 years and I know my job inside out. I am the sort of person that doesn't need to be told what to do I can just get on with the daily tasks without being told.
Recently my supervisor has started being quite pushy, if I am in the middle of a task he will say once you have finished X can you do Y, then when I start doing Y he will say after you have finished that can you do Z.
I have a weekly job that I always do on a Thursday and as soon as I started doing it he approaches me and asks how long it will take me as XYZ needs doing. It's not a job that I can give a time on as it takes a different amount of time each time.
I haven't noticed him doing this with anyone else.

If you know the job inside and out surely you can estimate how long it takes?

A manager asking you to do jobs? Shocking.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 04/04/2026 22:06

Sounds like he wants you to speed up. Maybe you’ve slowed down and he wants more from you?

Swiftie1878 · 04/04/2026 22:28

Yeah, it sounds like you’ve maybe become TOO comfortable and are slower/less dynamic than your manager wants/expects.

Try not to be defensive and see this as an opportunity to really show your skills and experience and push on!

Good luck x

Do you have regular one to one meetings with your manager? Bring up why they are suddenly time managing your task list. Ask if their has been a problem with your performance recently.

Micromanagement is putting you on a development plan for using plain type when they wanted you to put the second sentence in italics.

Real life example....

i don’t think the speed of my work is a problem I have just started doing the role of a staff member who has left and she was doing it in 36 hours a week and not finishing the job I work 29 and have finished it.
My manager doesn’t seem to have any problems with my work just my supervisor. He asked me yesterday to do a job and I explained I already have quite a bit of work on and could another member of staff take on the job as there were 3 other members of staff in who hadn’t been allocated jobs and it came across he was too scared to ask them.

Hmmm… sounds like they have some work to do with you guys.

Just crack on, do your best, push yourself, I’m sure you’ll be fine.
Make sure if they lay people off, it won’t be you.

I don’t have a problem been told what jobs to do it’s the overloading of work that is more the problem

Ask the supervisor - can we have a conversation about how I should prioritise work? I notice you are often asking me to work on something different. Do you have worries about my work or how I organise it?

that forces them to either name what they want (maybe there is something wrong) or to admit there is nothing wrong and you are fine.

some supervisors just think they have to say something to be the boss even if everything is running smoothly without their input.

Thank you I will try and do that I get very anxious talking about work but if I don't say anything nothing will change.
