Neighbours fence (and dog)

More of a WWYD than an AIBU.

Neighbour has a little dog that is a little bit rambunctious. So much so that it has managed to take 5 panels out of the fence that separates our properties. The fence is old and probably needs replacing anyway but I’m now concerned that little dog may nip my child through the gap in the fence. We’d like to put up a new fence completely to resolve this issue. The fence belongs to neighbour but I have a feeling it was put up by the couple that used to live here.

My quandary is: do I just put up a new fence completely on our side separate to their fence or do I (with their permission) replace the existing fence. I’m a bit concerned that the dog will just do to our new fence what it’s already done to the old one.

WWYD?

New one on your side.

Put up your own on your side of the boundary

Alwaysontherun · 04/04/2026 19:26

I agree with the PP and would put a fence up on your side. You are right to be concerned

in the mean time id put some chicken wire up across the gap areas to keep the dogs separate even if theirs does rip another bit of wood off.

I’d talk to them, say the fence needs replacing and ask if they’d like to go halves on a new fence in the existing location. If they say no, I’d put one up on my side but make it clear if they take the old one down, and the dog causes any damage to my fence, then they will need to pay for repairs.

New one on your side incase the dog damages it.

Silverbirchleaf · 04/04/2026 19:43

Discuss first about replacing it, and if not, new fence on your side.

Honestly I’d remind them of their obligation to keep their dog secure and that it can pop its head through the fence. If you’re willing to 50/50 with them.

You could try with the we see (naughty dog) has made quite a holes in the fence and it’s possible soon she/he will make their way though. I’m happy to go halves on a new fence to keep keep the gardens secure.

Otherwise yes put up your own. However id put chicken wire between the two fences so they don’t just take theirs down and get the nice enjoyment of your free fence for their dog to chew and scratch.

Thanks all, Some good suggestions. We’ve only been here a year so hesitant to cause any issues but I’ll definitely pop round there for a chat and see what she thinks of splitting the cost of a new fence. If not, we’ll go with a separate one and put something in between.

You say the fence is owned by the neighbour.

I'd speak to them about the problem but I wouldn't immediately offer to go halves. If it's their fence they should pay to replace it.

Obviously you want to keep safe so you can think again if they won't do it, but don't offer straight up.

Put one on your property and get some cheap plastic sheets to drop down between the 2 fences.. Stop the ddog trying to get through the new fencing.
