Totally random and insignificant question about scented candles...

Saw some reduced smelly candles, absolute bargain and thought I'll get some as DH mentioned we were running low. I didn't take much notice, had a sniff and they smelt lovely. The scents are those generally used at Christmas, which I didn't notice or would've cared, think pine, mulled wine, cinnamon etc. Apparently they're no good because we don't want a house smelling like Christmas is summer?! I just find this utterly ridiculous, does it really fricking matter???
Please help settle this pointless debate as I believe I'm im the right.

Yabu - of course you can't have Christmas type smells if it's not the season

Yanbu - it's just a scent, makes the room smell nicer, they're all just aromas.

Thank you for participating as I'm sure you have much more important things to be doing! Xx

I use candles all year round, whatever scent I feel like
if they're cheap you can always keep them until winter

IlovePhilMitchell · 04/04/2026 17:54

YABU - I’m a candle fanatic. All Christmas/winter candles need to be used up by end of Feb/March at the latest.

Now is the time for spring/fresh scents.

IlovePhilMitchell · 04/04/2026 17:56

Also can’t believe you found a DH that tells you when you need more candles. Never let him go.

1000StrawberryLollies · 04/04/2026 17:58

YABU. I wouldn't use a Christmassy one in spring or summer! I get that it's a bit ridiculous, but it's the wrong vibe!

ILoveDaffodills · 04/04/2026 18:00

I don't use scented candles but if I did I'd want fresher scents this time of year, not cisy winter ones. I'd simply put them away until Autumn. No need for a drama.

On the basis of me chucking a tiny amount of Christmas Cranberry flavoured Zoflora down the toilet just now to finish off the bottle (couldn't be bothered to keep it for another 9 months!), nothing bad has happened, so I'm herewith giving you permission to burn a Christmas candle in April with impunity 😀

..... you aren't the friend on that other thread about the candle obsession are you ....?

Theraffarian · 04/04/2026 18:28

Christmas candles from about October to February here , the rest of the year will be other scents . I guess I associate them with darker nights and wintery weather . Spring will be moving into lighter fragrance, which also gives the opportunity to own more candles !

This!

Llamamaman · 04/04/2026 18:33

You can have what you like but Christmassy scents are usually associated with winter (rich, earthy, warming) it does feel odd to have them in Spring/ Summer.

ThursdayLastWeek · 04/04/2026 18:35

I’m afraid I’m with DH on this.
needs to be a seasonally appropriate scent imo.

Alittlefrustrated · 04/04/2026 18:35

YABU - keep them for winter

Lol I can categorically say I'm not lol! To me a scent is just that, something nice to take away the smell of having cooked fish, make it smell nicer than the usual odours of life now and again.

YABU. My DH would be horrified and run to check his air purifier readout in case I had lit one while he was out. Take what you can get.

Doggymummar · 04/04/2026 19:08

I'm still on the Christmas candles, the scent will be gone by next time Christmas rolls around, so Christmas cookies all they say. Just 24 left. Also the two Christmas hand washes by the sinks and my Christmas pyjamas.

Ponoka7 · 04/04/2026 20:53

I'm team DH. I only haven't changed my heavy sofa throw because we have had a cold snap (NW), but I deliberately used the last of my pine scented cleaning products, last week. I have to use artificial flowers and they are now tulips. Memories are connected to scents, there's no 'just' about them. Spring has sprung.

I also can’t get beyond the DH who knows how many scented candles are in the house!

So many sexist comments on this thread. If you don’t want women to be stereotyped and pigeon holed, don’t do it to men.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 05/04/2026 13:17

I'm with your DH. I have 3 different favourite scents that get me through from September - January, and I would definitely feel weird about using them at other times of the year. Sorry!

MovedlikeHarlowinMonteCarlo · 05/04/2026 13:18

I'm with DH. Save them for winter.

GreaterCassowary · 05/04/2026 14:23

I wouldn't use Christmassy scents at this time of year but you should use whatever you fancy!

gaonimsc4 · 05/04/2026 14:27

Honestly I think Christmas scents outside of October-December is SCANDALOUS, it would cause chaos and confusion in my house. Strictly floral notes January-August. Gradual introduction of spices in September.

White Company Spring currently burning here.

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 05/04/2026 16:13

it makes no difference what random strangers on MN think as we’re not the ones living surrounded by the scent. Scent is a very personal thing. Your DH obviously doesn’t like Christmas scents in spring and he’s living in the same home so can’t avoid the smell. So since he likes those scents in winter and you like them at any time of year, and candles don’t expire within a year, the obvious answer would be to choose some that you both like to use now and keep the Christmas ones for winter.
