I have tried everything!! All sorts of antihistamines - prescribed, nasal sprays, eye drops! I’ve had them all. Nothing works. I just can’t cope with the tree pollen…it’s been nearly a month and it is not getting any better. Any suggestions or advice on what has worked for you wouid be hugely appreciated. I just can’t function at all and it’s impacting my work performance and quality of life in a big way.

Which antihistamine are you taking?

Sunshineandrainbow · 04/04/2026 14:02

Is it the silver birch tree?
My dd is allergic to that but thankfully antihistamines help.

ifyourheart · 04/04/2026 14:03

In the past few weeks I’ve tried fenoflexine (something like that), cetrizine, loratadine, piriton,

It’s really worth persisting and trying every type of antihistamine. I got told to try them to help ease my sinusitis and after doing several different over the counter types for two weeks each I was getting skeptical but one then suddenly worked. They have prescription only ones if you’ve tried all over counter ones. I also have special eye drops from GP which are amazing. You don’t specify what your symptoms are? Fragment for hives is different titchy eyes and nose.

A bit of vaseline under each nostril might stop the pollen getting in??

DH has a billion allergies, he started making his own kefir last year and didn't suffer from hay fever at all for the whole season, his dust, paper and Christmas tree allergies all disappeared. We're not sure if it's just the kefir or the overhaul of his gut bacteria in general, but something has worked. He hasn't needed to take any anti histamines.

As a side note other family members who tried it have come off their indigestion medications. I'm talking about people who have been on prescribed meds for years.

Same her and I'm now so fed up with it. Have you tried beconase beclometasone nose spray? This really really helps most people. Sadly no longer for me.

To make it worse, it's not just tree for me, but trees in spring, grass in summer and worse of all, mold in autumn and winter so I get it all year round and I only get a few weeks of respite. It's also getting worse every year. Last winter, it even trigger asthma for the first time. Nothing works at all.

I finally got an appointment with a specialist clinic, one year after I was referred. I am desperate for some proper treatment.

I forgot to say DH worst allergy was to mould and that's completely gone too. These weren't mild allergies either they were debilitating.

@Garnersomesun, I am honestly very cynical as it doesn't seem to hold much scientifically but I'm ready to try anything!

How do you make Kefir and how much does he take? How did he come up with this remedy?

audhdandme · 04/04/2026 14:32

Hayfever jab? I can’t have it because I’m pregnant but DH swears by it

I think it's pretty well known that 80% of immunity is in the gut, isn't it? There are quite a few studies on the connection between poor gut flora and allergies. The kefir is therefore logical.

Kefir lover with great gut diversity, totally still taking antihistamines with beconase spray 2x a day. Still miserable. Alder & birch are the culprits. 🙄

He was overweight intolerant to gluten, generally feeling pants, so he decided to get his gut bacteria in order, started to eat more vegetables and less crap, he's allergic to quite a few fruits. The kefir just ended up being a natural progression of that, he bought it from the supermarket at first and then read there was more good bacteria in the homemade stuff.

To be honest we just kind of started to notice that his allergies weren't bothering him after the fact, he has a job that takes him outside in the summer sometimes and I suddenly commented that he'd not been using the hay fever stuff in the cupboard and then nearer Christmas he was able to help wrap presents and the big one was the mouldy cupboard, I needed help getting something out and he was ok afterwards.

He bought some kefir grains from Amazon, you can get them from health food shops, you use any milk, it takes about 24hrs just sitting on the side, there's plenty of YouTube videos. The process eats the lactose so it's ok if you're lactose intolerant. He drinks some on an empty stomach before bed, I am not that brave. I mix it in with my skyr for breakfast. He still eats crap sometimes.

That's such a shame 😞. I don't think any amount of kefir is going to help with his other allergies like the food ones, our kids have those too, but because he wasn't very healthy to begin with maybe getting rid of that extra inflammation in his body has just allowed a bit of a reset. Anyway he's too scared to stop taking it now 😂 and he lost 3 stones and generally feels better all round.

Chatsbots · 04/04/2026 15:09

Yeah, it will be the reduction in inflammation generally in your case. That's excellent. Don't stop taking it. 🙂

Sunshineandrainbow · 04/04/2026 17:54

Fexofenadine used to be prescription only, you can now buy 180mg in most shops but I think you can get stronger on prescription.
