To slow cook the lamb the night before?

I have guests for an Easter lamb lunch tomorrow arriving at 1.30, lunch at 2pm. Have a large leg of lamb which I am will cook in the slow cooker as I prefer this. I’ve just realised it’ll need 8 hours which means getting up at 6 to put it on!

im thinking of putting it on at midnight instead and finishing it off in the oven to crisp up for 30 mins before the guests arrive.

thoughts on the wisdom of this much appreciated

Timer switch that turns the slow cooker on at 6am?

Pollpoll · 04/04/2026 13:05

Essentially you are planning to cook, cool then re-heat the lamb, I'm sure it would be fine in the timescale but I'd roast it in the oven.
Or do you have a plug in timer to switch it on at 6?
I'd be more comfortable with uncooked lamb out of the fridge overnight than reheating.

I don’t have a timer switch

Yes I also do this, cook slowly the night before

Flyonthewall01 · 04/04/2026 13:07

Can’t you set it to slow cook on a low heat for longer so it will see you through?

Jellybelly80 · 04/04/2026 13:07

Can’t you just get up at 6 and get a really good start to the day chores/prep wise? It could give you enough time later in the morning to have 40 winks

strawberry12345 · 04/04/2026 13:10

I guess so but I was rather hoping for a lie in

@Zuve does it turn out as good?

A slow cook lamb is ALWAYS nicer the next day

Brightbluesomething · 04/04/2026 15:38

I’m using the Poppy Cooks Instagram recipe for slow cooked lamb - overnight or 12 hours. Enjoy your lie in.

This. Cook it today.

If it’s a big leg of lamb, make sure it fits your slow cooker @strawberry12345. You don’t want to be getting the saw out in the early hours. Speaking from experience here 🙄

Pineapples123 · 04/04/2026 17:13

I did it overnight in the slow cooker last week- was delicious and much easier than faffing about all day

strawberry12345 · 04/04/2026 17:13

@MissNowt i already got the electric saw out this morning and cut the end off! Very satisfying!

How does the difference between cooking the lamb a slow cooker and cooking it in the oven amount to a whole day of faffing about?
