researching the Easter story through Roman eyes. Could the Romans have seen Jesus as a usurper ?

I'm currently researching the historical context of the Easter story and first-century Judea under Roman rule as part of looking at Holy Week, the crucifixion and resurrection I've been exploring how the Roman authorities might have perceived Jesus at the time and could the Romans have seen Jesus as a potential usurper

Crowd dynamics and predictions: Jesus drew large, enthusiastic crowds (e.g., feeding miracles, triumphal entry). He predicted the Temple's destruction ("not one stone will be left," Mark 13:2), which could sound like incitement or threat. During a tense Passover, any popular agitator risked sparking riots.

Ah, the enthusiastic crowd style of terrorist 😂thanks for clarifying

Don’t be silly.

Yup sure, the OP is correct and makes a good argument. Jesus was in fact a terrorist, and qas she explains, the Romans were right to crucify him 🙄

ApriloNeil2026 · 03/04/2026 22:25

well if they let him live then im guessing no one would remember him

OP posts:
tnorfotkcab · 03/04/2026 22:26

There's literally nothing suggesting he was a terrorist 😂

Well, if it weren’t for his followers, he’d not even have been a footnote in history, just a briefly-active itinerant preacher who got on the wrong side of the Sanhedrin and got a nasty criminal death.

indeed and The belief of his followers that he rose from the dead, and their subsequent movement to spread his teachings, is what established him as a major historical figure, so basically he could have been knocked out etc and yet all that for one person and how many have died in his name and for what excatly ? the numbers lost dont justify all that for one man, there has been many people in history that have helped humanity alot better than jesus did

OP posts:
ApriloNeil2026 · 03/04/2026 22:47

plus how can anyone believe in Christianity, when the majority is copyed from pagan influences ? if Christianity was truly its own religion then why did the leaders of the day choose to include pagan rituals and believes etc

OP posts:
Moonmelodies · 03/04/2026 22:49

Given the lack of contemporary Roman evidence, one might conclude they never saw him at all, let alone as a usurper.

I’m not sure I’d see this approach as particularly ‘historical’. I mean, there are only two passing references to a historical Jesus even existing, outside of writings by his followers, most of which only started being composed long after his death.

Most historians now accept there probably was a historical Jesus, but not all.

No, you just write the same as a particular male user on here.

As CS Lewis said “A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic— on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse”

Dontlletmedownbruce · 03/04/2026 23:19

If I'm interpreting correctly, I don't think anyone is suggesting he was a terrorist in the literal sense. I presumed it referred to the adage one man's freedom fighter us another man's terrorist. Or to simplify it, a good guy v bad guy. To the local Jews he was the good guy, to the Romans the bad guy. A popular person who attracts crowds and preaches about a different way of life is immediately a threat to a ruling empire.

It's school holidays, folks.

Just remember, OP, that 'researching' doesn't mean asking the internet or reading wikipedia, and your teacher will notice.

Isn't that the whole point of the arrest and crucifiction? The Romans mocked Jesus calling him King of the Jews. I'm not too up on scriptures but I don't think he ever referred to himself as King but someone did, presumably his followers. It was an occupied territory and here is someone that the locals love that has been given unofficial leadership status. He needed to be dealt with to avoid a revolt.

Some of the locals loved him. Those locals who were leaders did not. This was partly from lack of faith and partly because they feared the wrath of Rome if they got behind him.

Pilate made it clear that he didn't want to get involved in infighting among the locals, which is how he saw the pro and anti Jesus forces at play. He was not the instigator of the pressure to have Jesus done away with.

P0cketP1g · 04/04/2026 03:53

The bible clearly states that the Romans, Pontius Pilate specifically, did not see Jesus Christ as a threat but the Jews (Saduccess and Pharisees) did and so, to pacify them under threat of rioting (and in order to fulfil the prophecy of the Messiah), He was crucified.
