To wonder whether the media headlines about teenage gatherings in Clapham have been a bit exaggerated?

I live near but not in Clapham. I understand it must be very scary if you are in the area, having these crowds of teenagers suddenly turning up.
But AIBU to think the media are exaggerating the danger? I have heard there was some looting and one girl arrested for attacking a police officer but overall there doesn't seem to have been mass violence or theft. Just a lot of teens, some of them disturbingly masked, gathering in one place in big numbers because of some TikTok trend.

I honestly wonder if all the media coverage was unhelpful in the sense that it may have given them the reaction they wanted.

AIBU?

I understand that it was very scary for the people who were there. I suppose I just wonder whether all the dramatic reporting in a sense gave the stupid people there what they wanted : attention & notoriety.

Have you actually viewed any of the footage?

No. I have read a lot of articles which said there was looting and an emergency services worker attacked by 3 girls, 2 13yos and 1 17yo, but the overall situation sounds more like crowds of teens shouting and scaring people, which is awful but not the same thing as huge numbers looting or attacking people.

sure, thats perfectly normal, not worth media coverage

Meadowfinch · 03/04/2026 04:11

OP, surely you realise that if 100 teenagers can rampage through Clapham, looting and intimidating, and attacking police officers for fun, and get away with it today...what will happen tomorrow? Do you enjoy the idea of looters running up your street smashing your car? Do you think mob rule would be fun? 🙄

And why should a group of stupid ill mannered teens be allowed to steal from shop keepers who work hard and are already struggling? Why should they be allowed to frighten children and old people for kicks? How sick is that?

The police are working through the cctv footage and arresting those they identify. A ridiculous tiktok trend could land those teens with a criminal record and make it much harder to find a decent career. So stupid. And dangerous.

I used to live in CJ and whilst I am not excusing or condoning this behaviour, I remember teh exact same thing happening several times in the 90s. I think now it gets over hyped and out of hand because of social media. its not a new thing though.

Farewelltothatid · 03/04/2026 06:13

I hadn't heard anything about this.
I personally find it extremely disturbing.

A few years back we had problems with young teenagers in our area which sometimes involved large groups of them walking down the middle of the road intimidating people and sometimes causing damage - this is a residential area. And I found it extremely frightening and intimidating. And this footage is much worse than what I experienced.

So no I don't think the problem is being over exaggerated.

Yes, my grandmother taught at Ensham in the 1980s (one of the girls' schools which amalgamated in the 1990s to form Graveney). She remembers gangs of girls from Garratt Green waiting outside some days for mass brawls. Fortunately no weapons involved from what she's told me.

Looting and attacking a police officer is violence and intimidation. What’s your benchmark, @Carla786??

Where in my OP have I said people who assaulted, looted or intimidated should not be punished? I haven't.

Obviously anyone who looted or assaulted police should be dealt with by the police and courts — I’m not defending that AT ALL.

My point was simply that from what’s been reported so far, there doesn’t seem to have been widespread violence or large-scale looting, despite some of the headlines suggesting a full-scale “rampage”. Though it's possible there could have been more if the shops had not closed early.

If you look at headlines, a lot of language used arguably amplifies fear unnecessarily : 'riots', 'rampage', 'thuggery' etc A lot if comments I've seen online seem to think it involved mass rioting, mass looting & violence.

When it sounds more like a large amount of selfish & stupid teens gathering (not illegal in itself), with a minority predictably escalating to theft & intimidation, and the 3 disgusting girls, 2 only 13, who assaulted the emergency services worker. Worse outcomes happen annually after the Notting Hill Carnival, but that rightly isn't termed a 'riot' or 'rampage'.

That said, large gatherings like this are worrying- extremely scary for those present. for another, it shows a depressing amount of mindless group think. Even a wholly law abiding crowd could present a crush risk if something made them stampede.

Why did all these teens decide to block traffic? Part of me suspects that it's another worrying sign of the amount of chaos and distraction the Chinese Communist Party can exercise via spreading these stupid trends.

You are being incredibly unreasonable and possibly naive. I was actually going to make a post asking if the media is downplaying this.
The boss of M&S has said this:

'I keep hearing crime is falling, especially in London – something none of us believes, and very few people working in retail would see,' Mr Keeve said.
'In fact, we see the absolute opposite in our high streets and in our stores.' Footage from the attacks showed hundreds of young people, many dressed in all black, surging into shops in Clapham, south London, in coordinated 'link-ups' organised through social media.'

Staff had ammonia thrown in their face. I think you are being unreasonable op.

shellyleppard · 03/04/2026 06:43

I was in my nearest city on Monday. Same big gangs of teenagers marching through the shopping centre. Shouting in shops and refusing to move for anyone. It actually made me feel nervous....... Wonder if it was the same thing as the London incident

Absolutely, @Carla786 youd be getting threatened and assaulted by mask wearing mob?

That sounds horrible. Probably was. 💐

Hopefully TikTok restrictions will kick in soon. This could not have happened on the same scale without SM. Parents need to put their foot down, schools and government too.

What is your source for staff having ammonia thrown in their faces? That's unbelievably horrible if so.

I've read about this in the Times, Telegraph, Standard, Independent and Mirror and seen no mention of ammonia being thrown.

@Carla786 where did I say you said they shouldn’t be punished?
Im more concerned you’re downplaying it as “ah kids, it’s just larks innit” …. But then is it paranoia or an extreme “they can never do anything wrong poor lambs” blaming their violence, thuggery and agression on the Chinese Communist Party?
do you mean

  • this is all fake news and AI generated?
-is just a few teens larking about, why is everyone so judgemental to them? -nothing to see here, move along you horrible meanies?
Charlize43 · 03/04/2026 06:53

What is happening to this country? It was only a few weeks ago that I was reading about how 3 teenage girls had got off a bus and assaulted and killed an elderly man in Kings Cross, for the thrill of it, it seems. I am appalled by this violence.

PoppinjayPolly · 03/04/2026 06:59

@Carla786 Why did all these teens decide to block traffic?
because they can and know there is no repercussions and even if they are identified they’ll have bleeding heart politicians and members of the public who want to be seen as down with the kids and right on who will support and defend them with phrases like “well they’re not doing anything actually illegal, well only one of them actually assaulted/killed someone, surely it’s more important we find out why they felt so disenfranchised to behave like this?! They must be so sad!! #hug a hoodie!!”

I see where you got the ammonia claim from. The Telegraph reported the M&S boss' comments, which mentioned an ammonia attack. But this did not relate to the Clapham incident, it was a separate crime. The shoplifting and abuse of staff needs to be tackled urgently.

'As retail director at Marks & Spencer, I see this reality every day. I see the hurt and listen to the concerns of colleagues and customers after a shop attack.

:'In the past week alone, we have had gangs forcing open locked cabinets and stripping shelves, two men brazenly emptying the shelves of steak and walking out, a large group of young people ransacking a store before assaulting a security guard, a colleague was headbutted while trying to defuse a situation, and another was taken to hospital after having ammonia thrown in their face.'
