To think that Coco Pops are not a good after school snack?

Makes me cross that they advertise this during childrens' programmes. DS (5) is asking constantly for them, he knows we don't have 'unhealthy' cereal, but believes the tv.

Am I missing something here, surely Coco Pops can't be good, can they?

i'd rather give ds a biccie - at least it's not pretending to be something it isn't.

OverMyDeadBody · 18/06/2008 19:31

it's just marketing. All they want to do is increase their profits by expanding out of breakfast time into snack time as well.

Jusyt explain this to yuor kids and tell them that just because an advert says something doesn't mean it's true or they have to listen to it.

Or alternatively don't have them watch channels with adverts on them?

MrsDougRoss · 18/06/2008 19:31

but they are nice, i used to have coca pops and I am did not turn out to bad. There are plenty of other adverts for healthier food, it is the adverts for toys that annoy me.

scanner · 18/06/2008 19:32

Agreed, we often nip into a local cafe with other parents and children after school, the dc's have cake. They know cake is a treat though, this horrible commercial is implying that of all the foodstuffs available for a snack that Coco Pops are a good choice. Can't be, surely?

DD's know that adverts are about selling, (I used to work in advertising). DS doesn't get it though.

dont know
I bought choco balls in morrisons lasty week as they were buy one get one free. They went down a treat and children brushed their teeth afterwards

KaySamuels · 18/06/2008 19:37

I have just eaten a bowl of chocolate cake in milk

I was deprived of coco pops as a child.....

I'm not saying if your dcs aren't allowed coco pops after school they wil wind up the same way but you just never know.

harleyd · 18/06/2008 19:39

omg the odd bowl of coco pops is hardly a big deal

scanner · 18/06/2008 19:45

No, honest I'm not a holier than thou type parent. We have a 'treat' cereal that the dc's can have at weekend.

I just object to children being targeted in this way.

My gay male hairdresser, who really doesn't "get" children thinks those ads are a disgrace.

dinny · 18/06/2008 19:51

don't let them watch commercial channels then

Tortington · 18/06/2008 19:54

coco pops are the work of the devil

who gies their kids chocolate for breakfast?

i am not a fabbo parent when it comes to food and nutrition -

but lets talk basics

chocolate for breakfast

not even the generally ignorant and ill educated can fly that one past me - nope nope nope

back in th'olden' days, my kids had cornflakes with a tea spoon of sugar splinkled on top

now, dd won't eat breakfast and ds has toast.

PrimulaVeris · 18/06/2008 19:55

Oh dear. Weetos too. And Cheerios.

Guilty

lazarou · 18/06/2008 19:56

Nothing wrong with cocoty pops. I love 'em

Flashman · 18/06/2008 20:00

I just object to children being targeted in this way. - why is that any worse than any other ad?

Desiderata · 18/06/2008 20:00

Coco Pops are fab! I have no problem giving my kid coco pops for breakfast, or at any other time of the day.

Lighten up, and get back to your broccoli sarnies

lazarou · 18/06/2008 20:01

Yeah, you bunch of squares...

Now, my DS's never ever get coco pops for breakfast, but for a snack after school, when a lot of their classmates are being fed sweets or ice-cream at the school gate, they don't seem too bad. Just sweets with added vitamins and some milk.

As far as the ad's go, I tell my kids that the companies want us to waste our money on their products and that if they need to advertise, then obviously the product is not as good and they'd have us believe. Doesn't always stop them asking, but ultimately, I get to say whether they have it or not. Just say no!

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 18/06/2008 20:05

Dinny

He is a grown man and does not live here, what is a girl to do ????

Blu · 18/06/2008 20:05

I think Coco Pops as a snack (i.e 'extra' food) is better than Coco Pops for breakfast - a main meal which needs to sustain them beyond a refined sugar / cereals rush.
The milk is good....

We only have them occasionally in one of those mini-variety boxes. I think all those cereals are really expensive. DS has toast, egg, etc.

DarrellRivers · 18/06/2008 20:06

I used to think chocolate for breakfast was wrong
Dh has wornmedown won me round with his ways
Now we have coco pops 2 times a week, other cereals, waffles, pain au chocolate, pancakes, or crumpets.
All often with some fruit
Coco pops are not all that bad if eaten with a variety of different things probably less good if an exclusive meal choice
Sugar and chocolate are not evil
{waiting to be beaten up and proved wrong]

DumbledoresGirl · 18/06/2008 20:06

Oh dear, line me up against the wall. I give my children chocolate cereal for breakfast. In fact, when my children had constipation problems, the HV recommended choco shreddies for them as they are higher in fibre than most cereals. Obviously plain shreddies would be equally good if not better, but who wants to eat cardboard in the morning?
