to think it’s a bit depressing how little you can eat when you’re short?

I’m quite small, 5'1, and it’s honestly a bit of a shock when you realise how little your body actually needs. When you look into it, your “normal” is already quite limited compared to someone taller and then menopause comes along and seems to shrink it even further.

I am surrounded by people eating what looks like totally reasonable amounts. I join in and think I am eating normally, but over time the weight creeps up.
It doesn’t feel like overeating at all, that’s the frustrating part but it is for my height.

There is so little margin for error. A couple of small extras, a snack, a drink and I have tipped over. Meanwhile taller people seem to have so much more flexibility without even thinking about it.

Anyone else found this?

Unfortunately I have the appetite of a 6 foot Viking 😫

Also pregnant again and starting to feel like a beach ball 😢

You’ve got half a foot on me. I’m v envious. So 10 stone would look vastly different on me v you.

My appetite I suppose is smaller generally. I use a side plate or bowl for my dinners. Never a big dinner plate.

Whilst there’s a few short women here - where do you buy jeans from to fit length?!!
(sorry op x)

M&S and next do decent jeans.
M&S also do extra short in some of their trousers though weirdly I find them too short at 4ft 11!
If you’re on insta then Oh.My.Style and Katie_Gibbons1 are good to follow for petites.

It doesn't have to be if you find a privately owned basic one, and it does the same job as the big trendy companies. Plus you'll be supporting a local business. I go to a men's 'bodybuilder' type gym. Costs me £20 a month and it is open 24 hours.
It does the job.

Edited

That’s really interesting.
Another poster said the same too, I couldn’t find their post when I went back to quote them, so apologies other poster.
last time I looked, they were £50-£70 a month. I’d assumed they’d go up - like everything else has

What kind of small meals are everyone having?

Yesterday

No breakfast
Lunch: Mozzarella and tomato salad, a few nuts, yoghurt
Dinner: Cucumber and tomato salad, cod loin with asparagus, half slice of toast

I batch cook chicken soup in the pressure cooker, a bowl of it is around 500 calories and 50g protein so it's very filling. I also make a low fat beef chilli every week with lots of veg in it. Having those in the fridge means I can grab them at the times I might otherwise pick up an oven pizza on the way home, ie when I just want something convenient.

Also re the gyms comment, strength training/bodybuilding type gyms are some of the friendliest places. They won't have swimming, classes etc which keeps their costs down.

I’m short and overweight - I’ve recently lost nearly 3 stone - mostly on SW and more recently with WLI
I have still got a fair bit to lose and sticking to under 1000 calories sucks
Due to health issues the only exercise I can do is swimming as can’t even walk very far
I manage by limiting my diet to only protein/fruit/veg/salad, black coffee and low calorie drinks

That must take a lot of will power.

JaceLancs · 03/04/2026 12:44

@Pinkfluffypencilcase the injections help although I’m on a quite low dose
Due to health I’ve been gluten and dairy free for a number of years and as GF bread, cakes, biscuits etc aren’t that nice the temptation isn’t as bad
My main sins are alcohol and chocolate!

I have lost quite a lot of weight through changing my diet, and kept it off. I always eat 3 meals a day but I eat lots of protein, veg and salad, and a bit of fruit. I just don't eat carbs much at all.
Usual day might be something like
Breakfast - omelette with tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese
Lunch - tuna mayo salad
Dinner - chicken/bolognaise/salmon/meat or fish of choice, with lots of veg. Today I had a bit of rice with beef and mushroom stroganoff, but when I was losing weight I wouldn't have any.

I lost weight never going hungry, really just by stopping pasta/bread/rice/potatoes, and adding more protein.

JaceLancs · 04/04/2026 01:14

Today’s meals were
Breakfast black coffee
Lunch chicken salad
Dinner chicken with green veg
Tonight 2 Lindt chocolate mini bunnies and some vodka!
Stayed in my calorie allowance - just!

MyTrivia · 04/04/2026 01:17

Yes, I agree - I find that it’s bad enough for me at 5ft 4. I’ve definitely noticed that tall people can put on a lot of weight and it doesn’t seem to show.

jamimmi · 04/04/2026 01:43

I really struggle and am.very overweight at 4ft 11. Moderatly active job but at 54 dont loose weight unless I eat under 1000 per day. I walk 7 to 8 k steps per day. Week day food, small bowl 0% fat yog and fruit. Lunch normally low cal soup and a warbutions thin , tea chicken or fish sometimes pasta. Its boring doent always work, and lack.of food in an active job makes me tured in the pm . I need another 6 inches !

Firefly1987 · 04/04/2026 01:43

I'd rather be short and not be self-conscious about my massive feet, hands and broad shoulders. Plus, no matter how much weight I lose I'll always weigh a lot more than a petite woman. Which sucks. I remember one of my (male) family members telling me "no woman should weigh more than 10 stone" and he knew damn well I probably weighed over that when he said it!

Soup sounds great but its half my daily calorie intake😒

I loose weight when I eat soup. I buy ones that are close to 200 cal for the whole can, like Heinz French onion. That way I feel fuller and haven't gone over on calories.
Harder to do when Dh is around and wants chips with his tea.
Yesterday I had
Breakfast
Milk coffee
Lunch
A full fat greek yoghurt with a bit of peach in it.
Gluten free toast butter no jam
Tea
Leftover homemade spaghetti
I wasn't hungry for the rest of the day so just drank water till bedtime.
No Idea on yesterdays calorie count, but when I eat like this for most of the week I might loose 1/2 to 1 kg

Birdsongisangry · 04/04/2026 09:47

@jamimmi it's a big portion tbf! It's chicken, water and vegetables so it's about as low calorie and high nutrition as you can get for the volume.
