In thinking exam invigilators should not be playing Battleships?

DD is doing end-of-year-10 exams.

The school hall is laid out in grid formation.

She thought she'd done something wrong when one of the teachers who was supervising a language exam today stood right next to her desk, with the grid in his hand and an orange blob on her position.

The other examiner nodded and smiled at the teacher by her desk.

Dd and some of her friends later worked out the examiners had been playing Battleships - Dd was a ship.

Dd is laughing about it, and it is quite amusing, but I'm not so sure teachers should be treating the exams with such levity.

What do you think?

"if i gave birth NOW " - well, that would certainly liven up the exam hall...

ScienceTeacher · 18/06/2008 20:19

Yes, zippie. We do invigilation but no one tells us to eff off.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 18/06/2008 20:19

They are all really amusing....

Apart from the Diet Coke, that is down right unprofessional.IMO

ScienceTeacher · 18/06/2008 20:21

I find that invigilation gives me an annual opportunity to catch up on my pelvic floor exercises.

Blandmum · 18/06/2008 20:22

I have played the 'who is first to hand out the paper' game

Good kid , bad kid.

Counting left handers

Counting the ginger haired.

anything to keep alert really.

Glad we don't do them any more

zippitippitoes · 18/06/2008 20:22

i do remember invigilating with a mate and we got the giggles when you cant stop and you start crying

we had to try and hide from each other behind the room divider things that were opened out

but we couldnt manage to not see each other

it then spread to the kids

it was awful

i nearly wet myself

tears were streaming down our faces

har - I think it sounds like big fun

Whizzz · 18/06/2008 20:25

I heard lots of tutting today in the staffroom at one invigilator that had turned up in very clicky heels & kpet walking up & down the hall making a right old racket

girlandboy · 18/06/2008 20:26

I'm invigilating GCSE Science next week, and unfortunately I will be the only invigilator present (small group). This is even more boring than usual! Like ScienceTeacher I will have to limber up my pelvic floor. Not even allowed to take a book or magazine - suppose I will have to look at the science paper.
Think of me.

ScienceTeacher · 18/06/2008 20:27

Ooo, tell us what you think! You will probably be able to do most of it

findtheriver · 18/06/2008 20:29

oooh invigilation tag.... the laughs we used to have!!
And using co-ordinates A3, C11 etc to identify ugliest pupil, girl most likely to get up the duff etc.
Teachers don't do invigilation any more - but almost used to be worth doing it for the games.

WilfSell · 18/06/2008 20:30

hahahaha

we don't invigilate our (university) exams any more but if I did, I would be nicking these games.

We were always FAR too serious and would read Hello wrapped up in our important research articles.

twinsetandpearls · 18/06/2008 20:30

I and every teacher I know plays invigilation games, although of course now we are not supposed to invigilate.

pointydog · 18/06/2008 20:35

what do pewople mean there's no invigilation these days? What happerns instead?

girlandboy · 18/06/2008 20:35

ScienceTeacher - I invigilated the latest Geography GCSE a week or two ago. Felt pleased and a little bit smug that I could do it. Especially as I didn't do Geography at school!

ScienceTeacher · 18/06/2008 20:36

They get people off the streets, Pointy.

girlandboy · 18/06/2008 20:36

pointydog - the schools employ outsiders to do the invigilation. Like me.

TheFallenMadonna · 18/06/2008 20:37

You're not allowed to read in schools Wilf. Hence the need for more creative solutions...

ScienceTeacher · 18/06/2008 20:38

I think I should be awared the ICT GCSE purely on my ability to Mumsnet and run a Facebook page - it was a bit of a joke (they were given the questions a month before the exam and could bring in notes!)

pointydog · 18/06/2008 20:40

whey hey! Great job

findtheriver · 18/06/2008 20:40

Pointy - invigilators are employed and trained specifically to do the job. Quite thorough training - I saw a little of it in our school - dvd, lengthy training session etc. Which is all very good because it's not a great use of teacher time to be standing watching pupils (and having a crafty game of tag!!). Dunno where scienceteacher is if they pick people off the streets, but it isnt like that here.

pointydog · 18/06/2008 20:42

thoroughyl trained in what? Looking stern and most comfy hush puppies?

findtheriver · 18/06/2008 20:45

Have you seen the exam regulations??? Blardy pages and pages!!!!!
Seriously though, with spot checks going on to see that everything is ticketyboo, there really is a lot of detail to get right.

pointydog · 18/06/2008 20:46

Can't you just read through it in bed with a cup of tea?
