Putting baby in washing basket in public

TottenhamCake · 31/03/2026 12:58

im really keen to find a more practical and safe way of washing my baby (4mo) after his swim lessons. Washing him in the shower feels like a disaster waiting to happen. I like to get him washed there as well, as he’s so exhausted I can’t get a bottle in him before his nap, and hate the thought of chlorine lingering on his skin.

im thinking of getting one of those foldable laundry baskets and using as a kind of bath. The shower heads there aren’t fixed to the wall so this could be done. Will I look like a complete lunatic though? Or does anyone have any better ideas??

Why are you wanting to do this? Literally every person with a baby ever has just stood in the showers. What on earth is wrong with it? It’s screaming main character energy.

The showers are busy, people are waiting. Don’t start pissing about with a basket when the shower is already designed to clean you much more efficiently.

Two easier solutions

cotton gloves for grip. They are sold as beauty gloves in beauty supply stores. Super cheap. We used these when bathing or showering with baby. They also help for applying soap if desired.

overkill option: they make mesh water slings.

She said folding washing basket, not bath. They collapse down and the water would go through the holes, so she could give him a proper hose down.

But she can just hose him down stood under the shower holding him, a baby in a costume isnt slippery. My eldest is 10 and we have been going swimming since before she was 1, I have never in a decade seen anyone set up a washing basket or bath in the showers, we went to classes specifically for babies, not 1 person whipping out their laundry basket 🤣, imagine a class of 20 all dashing to grab their baskets after the class. Doesn't happen.

Would he fit in a salad spinner? That would be a quick way of drying him too.

I wish they'd let us have the laughter reaction button back Grin. I just cackled at this and startled the cat.

Whosthetabbynow · 31/03/2026 16:11

My son holds his 9 month old and they get under the shower together. The baby loves it

Put him in the dishwasher with the toilet brush would be my suggestion, anything else is just grim.

sunshineandrain82 · 31/03/2026 16:13

I literally just step under the shower with my 6 month old. Wash his hair with something. And rinse the rest of him off.

he is very tired after so he gets a bit grumpy during it. Quickly change him. Make a a bottle up and he has a feed while I quickly get dressed myself.

How are you going to fill the baby bath? And is it going to be easy to empty? Crack on of you want, but it will be something you put on a ‘mad things I did with a newborn’ thread in a few years time.

Just hold the baby while you both shower.

Surely to fill the bath you’d just use water from the shower 🤦‍♀️ then tip it upside down in the shower to empty

I wouldn't think you'd look like a lunatic, but I would think "A bath, another thing to carry in and out, and realistically probably won't last long".

I used to strip my baby down whilst coming out of the pool, straight under the shower and then straight into a towel to dry him. Nappy on and wrap in blanket. Dress myself quickly then dress him.

I think it’s obvious that the OP is meaning she wants to sit the wriggly 4 month old in the basket to keep them contained/safe and use the shower head to wash them.

I would also hazard a guess that she doesn’t get in the pool with baby therefore is clothed and unable to shower with the baby.

Sorry how on earth do you take a 4m old swimming with out getting into the pool with them ?

I'm also curious about this 😳

Some kind of large net, perhaps? 🤔

MissCooCooMcgoo · 31/03/2026 16:24

Small pump bottle of hair and body wash. Small microfibre towel.

Cradle baby in the towel (reduces slippiness) wash baby with a pump of body wash. Rinse baby in arms. In the shower. Done.

CDTC · 31/03/2026 16:24

Just hold the baby in the shower?

VisitingInkMonitor · 31/03/2026 16:26

i have seen this exact set up at municipal thermal baths in Iceland but the baby baths are provided by the establishment so you don’t have to lug one there and back Maybe you could campaign for your swimming baths to provide them 😉

From the spectators gallery! 🤣

So, you're not only trying to wrangle your slippery baby, you're going to unfold, fill, then empty this basket device - where's the child when you're dealing with the basket thingy?

She’s not filling it 😂can’t you read?!

TeeBee · 31/03/2026 16:46

Oh love, don't worry about whatever anyone else thinks. Just do what suits you and yours. Parenting is hard enough without concerning yourself on other people's opinions on what works for you.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 31/03/2026 17:38

I have never washed the chlorine off my children after a swim… other than a walk through a shower. Never had any skin issues. Your being pedantic and woukd take up room for other users. If you want him bathes you’ll have to take him
home.

likelysuspect · 31/03/2026 17:38

SarahAndQuack · 31/03/2026 13:22

Does depend on the baby - there was a boy in our NCT group who really reacted to chlorinated water and if the OP's DC is like this, I would understand why she wants to get it off.

Well surely you wouldnt go swimming if that was the case?

likelysuspect · 31/03/2026 17:47

marcyhermit · 31/03/2026 13:29

A 4 month old isn't having a swimming lesson alone!

They are, the mums are all by the edge of the pool whizzing the kids along with butterfly nets and dredgers.

Babies are not allowed in a pool without an adult.

CassandraWebb · 31/03/2026 17:55

Seems reasonable to me
I only realised once my children were older that the reason I struggled so much to carry them as babies was because I had a (then undiagnosed) neurological condition

I wish I had ignored people who made out like it was "easy"/"correct " to do things their way and got on and just used whatever method suited me and my baby

Trainup · 31/03/2026 18:22

I just chucked our clothes on and showered/bathed at home. Can’t imagine the level of faff required when wet in swimming costume yourself that a baby bath would take.

stichguru · 31/03/2026 18:30

What is the water temp like of the showers at the pool? At mine, the showers are just push on and the temp varies so much within seconds, there's no way I'd put a baby in them! That being said, if the temp is steady and good, your idea sounds genius!
