Smacking lips.

If you smack your lips at the end of a sentence or before you speak, WHY? WHY DO YOU DO THIS?

I'm on a Teams conference where we are sitting and listening to someone talking about a genuinely important subject and all I want to do is lean through the screen and throttle them.

Full disclosure - I probably have misphonia, not a diagnosis but I feel similarly about people chewing with their mouths open, sniffing or clattering cutlery off their teeth when they eat.

I've never understood what smacking one's lips actually means.

PollyBell · 31/03/2026 11:25

There was an news reader years ago they did it all the time i had to stop watching

TMFF · 31/03/2026 11:26

I've always assumed they produced too much saliva or something.

But as an aside, getting irritated about people chewing with their mouths open, sniffing or clattering cutlery off their teeth when they eat, is completely normal.

Not everything has to be possible misophonia despite what many on Mumsnet will have us think.

I once attended a funeral led by a civil celebrant who did this or something like it all the way through. Every time she paused, she kind of pushed her chin upwards and made a popping sound with her lips. It was most bizarre and very distracting, not just for me - others commented on it afterwards. I really don't think a career involving any kind of public speaking was for her.

Someone is going to have to give me a demo of what lip smacking actually is. Not a clue what it looks or sounds like in real life, if I’m honest.

I know what you mean so now I'm smacking my own lips to see if I can do it.
I'm getting on my own nerves so maybe I'm doing it right

My DP has misophonia and massively struggles with people lip smacking. There are shows I have to watch on mute with subtitles as he cannot cope. The trouble is I know notice it too!

Lauren1983 · 31/03/2026 11:38

Example of lip smacking here at 19 seconds in. I presume this is what the OP means. My DP cannot cope if he keeps hearing it.

Yes, good example thank you. Making that smacking noise at the start or end of every sentence is completely unnecessary and seems to be an affected manner of speaking.

I think my person feelings of rage over other people's noises are far from normal, it seems to trigger a fury in me and has done since I was a child....

The Alpen advert that ran for ages with the man chewing with his mouth open meant I left the room rather than be around it.

I'm not quite so bothered by the lip smacking, but HATE IT when people suddenly stop in the middle of a sentence to give an audible, grimacing swallow. It makes me want to punch them.

Cosmication · 31/03/2026 12:04

I watched the video so I understand now. I can't see I've ever noticed anyone doing this and it doesn't bother me. Obviously if someone was doing it all the time then it would be annoying but that's the same with anything repetitive like someone always starting a sentence with the word 'Look..' or 'So..'

You'll spot it a lot now 😁 It does seem to be an affectation, bit like the gravelly voice fashion.

I used to work with a woman who already had a grating voice because she would shriek not speak, and who used to end every other sentence by shouting "d'ya know wot I mean?". Genuinely every other sentence. Absolutely horrendous trying to have a conversation with her.

I’m so glad you said this, I thought I was the only one. Maybe we call it something else?

It's the tongue and the roof of the mouth really. People often make this noise when about to speak. I often hear it on the radio. Drives me nuts.

I stopped reading the thread because the thought of it all was just too horrible.

plims · 31/03/2026 21:52

It’s sometimes a nervous tick.

FuckaboutFindout · 31/03/2026 21:55

I had to listen to it 3 times to actually work out what it was all about.
Barely noticed tbh

Ilikewinter · 31/03/2026 22:10

OMG yes, and it's up there with people who suck their teeth - makes me want to knock the bloody teeth out !!
