AIBU to still plan NZ to Malta trip via Singapore and Rome?

May I gauge a few opinions about travel just now? We booked 6 months ago to fly from NZ to Malta for 2 months. We're flying through Singapore to Rome, then on to Malta at the end of April. I've been keeping a close eye on developments, the NZ Govt. site gives no cautions at this time. Are we crazy to even consider it? We would lose our money if we pull out, and have to confirm accommodation in a week. What would you do?

None of those places have issues and none are likely to. I wouldn’t worry about this at all (also, it sounds wonderful!)

Keep an eye on the government website but I see no reason why it’s an issue as those countries and regions are not affected. Have a wonderful trip!

You’re not flying via the Middle East nor are going to be anywhere near it so I’m not sure why this would be remotely troubling

Thank you so much for the replies. It's not so much the present political situation as the developing potential for wider issues. Also the jet fluel stocks which look quite seriously depleted...no insurance in the case of war, but if war causes serious shortages, it could possibly be construed that flight cancellations have been being caused by conflict, couldn't it? With the possibility of boots on the ground and the maniac and the religious nutters leading the charge of the morons, who knows?

I'd go, definitely!

I am not sure where you are reading that jet fuel stocks are (already) depleted though it could happen I suppose. Your concerns aren’t entirely irrational but over here in Europe planes are flying normally, the only ones impacted are ones going to or near the Middle East. I think the single biggest issue is going to be increased cost of everything.

Look, I know it's the Mail's hysteria and all, but this is what I was talking about...coming from NZ, I really didn't want to be stuck on the other side of the world for weeks. Here in the arse-end of the world, we have no news about the travel situation in Europe. NZ Foreign Affairs are a waste of space, too. Anyone have any insider info about curtailed future flights?

European airports face fuel shortage in weeks due to Hormuz closure

Jet fuel reserves are already running low and airports will be gripped by 'systemic' shortages of jet fuel if the passageway is not fully reopened by the end of the month, airports have warned.

Enjoy your trip. Have a lovely care free time!😊

pollyglot · 11/04/2026 06:44

Just checked the Govt website and they're now, last few days, advising caution in terms of delays and cancellations.

Not an insider these days but FWIW I'm sure there are plans being made but companies are keeping their cards close to their chests when it comes to the details.

The basic assumptions doing the rounds on the industry relevant SM is that initially you'll see consolidation of services on high frequency routes and that on short domestic/short haul flights where there's a terrestrial back-up, e.g. Rail, the curtailment might be more severe than on routes where there aren't easy alternatives.

Sorry if that doesn't help you but outside a select few everyone is guessing.

Flew through Singapore yesterday - no issues at all.

PenelopeChipShop · 11/04/2026 08:16

I think your trip would be ok as much of it is long haul and it’s before the shortages are due to hit. I haven’t yet booked a holiday for this summer though (I’m UK based) and am wondering whether to hold off until things are a bit more certain.

I'd caution assuming shortages won't hit flights until mid/ late summer...

Some of the pessimists in the industry are saying the effects on UK/EU flights will start to be seen end April/start May...
