Query at menstruation experiences

Is it just me, or is it unusual that my periods have never really bothered me? 🤔

I was out at lunch today with about 15 women and the topic of menopause came up. One woman said she couldn’t wait for it because her periods were so bad, and as the conversation went on, every single person agreed they hated theirs - bloating, pain, cramps, leaks, the lot.

I completely understand and don’t question their experiences at all, but it did make me wonder… in my late 30s, is it unusual that my periods have never really affected me like that? Other than the bleeding itself, I am completely unaffected.

It sounds like you've been lucky. I used to suffer quite a lot with pain. However since having children I don't really, and it's mostly just a minor inconvenience.

Mine didn’t really change until mid 40s, when they became heavier, flooding at times, big clots and irregular, unpredictable cycle lengths.

my late 30s I was like you.

They never bothered me, even as a teenager.
I remember getting into trouble with my mum because I asked if I could go swimming with my friends. She said I could but I had to take my younger sister, which , if course I didn't want to. Then I remembered I was on my period and my mum said I was fibbing. I genuinely forgot I was 'on'. So then I was grounded for lying!

No, I didn't either. I had no nausea in either pregnancy and I barely noticed the menopause, so perhaps my hormones just aren't particularly bothersome 🤷‍♀️.

Thank your lucky stars OP! I've had horrendous periods from day one. Menopause cannot come some enough for me. It is nice to hear that someone finds that part of womanhood ok though for a bit of balance. I do know a few others that are ok too but I would say most of my friends are in the suffering camp.

mynameiscalypso · 29/03/2026 20:52

Same. I might get some cramps for the first day but that’s about it. Most months, it ends up taking me by surprise because I’ve totally forgotten that periods are a thing.

I'm 47 and still waiting for the peri menopause and can count the number of times I've had period pain on one hand. Bleeding has always been easy enough to manage with normal pads and tampons. Pregnancy was very kind to me too. (Birth was a completely different story.)
I do appreciate this is one area of life I've lucked out on though and am very thankful. I do wonder what the menopause has in store for me.

NeedingASafeSpace · 29/03/2026 20:55

Mine have never really bothered me either. Much anyway. I have leaked a good few times of course. At times I get pains but not much. This month I wasn’t in pain at all. I just don’t like the “feel” of bleeding and having to wear pads if I’m honest and that’s about it.

RosesAndHellebores · 29/03/2026 20:55

Same as @Idontjetwashthefucker . Peri was a bit challenging but nothing not solved by HRT. I'm not sure it's that unusual but because they are unremarkable people don't mention them.

Kittycat2mom · 29/03/2026 20:55

I was the same only very occasional cramps until I hit peri ....thank goodness I'm finally through that stage. Cramps, bloating, leaks, gushes be thankful you are at least pre warned because women talk about this now. Beware the flooding....literally sitting on the loo because a super super plus ultra tampon lasted 10 mins even with tranexamic acid. ..fun times :((
DSis & cousins had issues from day 1, I was just grateful my experience was OK until later.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 29/03/2026 20:55

Until I had my daughter aged 36, my periods were so painfuI would vomit, faint, have pains down my legs, back, bottom, I would bleed through a packet of towels the first two days. I could bloat so much my trousers wouldn't fit.

Since she was born I don't feel a thing.

My friends would agree with you- I've never known anyone personally have them like I did.
