Intrigued as to what is deemed as a good amount and how people get to zero.

I don't consider your dc's sandwich crusts or pork chop fat to be 'food waste'. They had it, they tried it, they left some bits they didn't want.
Same here. If they'd been full and ate it anyway, it would have been a waste.

True food waste is you, as an adult, buying things and either not having a plan for how to use it, or changing your plans and not finding a way to store / freeze / reuse the ingerdients.
Yes.
Buying a bag of something when you only want a little bit and binning the rest, or buying a big carton of milk and binning most of it.

No food waste here because we only buy what we’re going to use. There’s only the two of us though. The food waste bin bag is always full though but that’s eggshells, teabags, fruit and veg peelings and trimmings.

We have always been like that, not just since food prices started going silly.

Soup tends to be the answer to veg waste.
Prepping veg and putting it into a soup bag in the freezer has worked well for me because I hate waste.
Keep adding to it and then make soup in the pressure cooker.
I have often picked up reduced chicken breasts in the supermarket, quickly prepped the, and added them to the bag too.
It makes for a nourishing tasty soup when pureed.
I used to buy a lot of 500ml of cream for cooking and end up putting it into the freezer.
I use supermarket own brand cream cheese in sauces now. It works so well.

I have a vast compost bin, I used to have chickens, now my friend's chickens get stuff and I tend to have a food clear out every so often, to make weird and wonderful food.
I use eggshells in the compost too, have leaf tea and use my citrus peelings for zest, pot pourri and candying.
I wouldn't say I never get any food waste but me and most of the villagers have looked at our newly issued food waste bins and wondered what alternative uses we can find for them. (Bird food or dog food caddy, shopping trolley and tool box are favourites so far)

We had katsu curry with rice last night and about half way through my middle child said she wasnt feeling too well. So she left about 2 tablespoons of rice and half a breaded chicken breast covered in katsu sauce (so it was quite soggy!). Would you have put that in Tupperware? I don’t think anyone would have eaten those leftovers (especially as it turns out we think she has scarlet fever 😏)

No probably not if they weren’t feeling well and we were worried it was contagious.

Otherwise I would eat the soggy chicken nugget (or more likely my husband would) and put the rice into Tupperware with the rest of the leftover rice (I always cook too much rice).

This level of obsessiveness is probably not a good thing… in fact my husband’s New Year’s resolution was NOT to finish the children’s plates off (because it can lead to overeating) but that hasn’t lasted long!

A few weeks ago I was heating up a handful of cooked carrots I had saved to have with dinner and I forgot them in the microwave… I woke up in the middle of the night and thought “THE CARROTS!!!” and couldn’t get back to sleep.

In the morning I was so tempted to eat them but told myself “NO! IT’S NOT WORTH GETTING FOOD POISONING OVER A HANDFUL OF CARROTS THAT PROBABLY COST 10P.” I had to really force myself to bin them. I think I actually have a problem….

I mean everything!!!

Yeah we use up leftovers but I always have a bit of salad left or a couple of floppy carrots or sprouting potatoes…

What's deemed as a good amount of food waste, does anybody manage nothing?

It goes to the chicken coop.......

Brings back fond memories of my Grandparents and their edible pets.

I waste very little. We have a waste food collection every week and 9/10 weeks mine is completely empty. It only really has anything in it if I buy a whole chicken or joint of meat and, as there are only two of us most of the time, I don’t often do that.

I sometimes throw away some old salad leaves that I didn’t eat in time, and obviously I also throw away egg shells, used teabags, vegetable peelings and banana skins but I compost all of that.

If I have veg that’s close to turning I’ll just chop it up and have either a salad or a stir fry, depending on the veg. I always have something in the freezer to bump it up with.

Lifeofthepartay · 29/03/2026 17:59

We eat a lot so nothing goes to waste 🤣, if a particular item is going to waste soon I try and think how can incorporate it to the already planned meals, or for a snack, if too late to use fresh it gets cooked...for example bananas to ripe go on banana bread or banana pancakes, carrots get put in oats or soups, or cakes too, cabbage gets lightly fried or in the oven

Planner2026 · 29/03/2026 18:25

Virtually none.

I plan our lunches and dinner really thoughtfully and but exactly what we need.
