Amazon pickle

I'll preface this with free admission that I was I the wrong here - fully admit it. I was expecting a delivery from amazon - usual stuff.

Amazon knocks on my door, hands over appropriately sized package, and leaves. I open it, expecting some toddler feeding aids. Except it's adult toys. The racy kind.

I check the packaging - it's neighbour's!

Now what do I do??? Yes, I should have checked first, it's my fault, lesson learned.

But a) how do I hand this in now? and b) this is otherwise a perfectly pleasant neighbour, no parking issues, no bin issues, no noise, otherwise excellent for parcels. I suspect that last one is out of the window now!

So what do I do? Hand it in, apologise and never look them in the eye again? Drop it in the back yard - won't the Amazon have taken pictures? Gaaaah!!!

DH is on the floor laughing.

Now I’ve stopped laughing.

tape it up, knock, say you had two at the same time and cut the tape on theirs accidentally. Hand over package.

Run back to your door before you go too red. And practice the poker face for when you see them by the bins 🤦🏻‍♀️😹😹😙

Sorry all you can do is move to the other end of the country.

Er... knock on, hand it over 'so sorry opened it as I was expecting an Amazon parcel for myself' and skedaddle quick!

LoveWine123 · 27/03/2026 14:21

Drop it off outside their door and run. They’ll never know it was you.

ChangePrivacyQuestion · 27/03/2026 14:22

Other end of the country isn't far enough here, Timbuktu wouldn't cover this! 🤣

What if amazon took a picture of my door?

REP22 · 27/03/2026 14:24

Oops! Can you reseal it so it doesn't look opened? Maybe with a bit of glue if cardboard seal is ripped?

I feel your mortification OP. No idea what I'd do if it happened to me with my elderly oddball neighbour - there's not enough Cif in the world to scrub that mental image from my mind... 🤢

Leave it at their door without comment (avoiding Ring doorbell if they've got one). A fox must have opened it.

fairislecable · 27/03/2026 14:24

Rewrap it and take to the neighbour and say your DH opened it by mistake!

They're unlikely to look too closely at the pic. Is your front door the same colour/type?

It's rather dustinct, unfortunately.

Let them wonder if you’ve seen their toys 😆

LillyLeaf · 27/03/2026 14:29

You need to decide what to do quickly in case they came knocking for their parcel! I think tape it up and leave on their doorstep, do they have a ring camera doorbell?

Oh dear. I'd still leave it at their door and say nothing. Your DH might not be able to restrain himself, but that's on him. If neighbour says anything you can just innocently say "no idea what was in it, DH didn't tell me." Feigned ignorance is the best way here, I feel. Maybe she was buying it for a friend... or neighbour with a birthday coming up (not literally). 😉

IlovePhilMitchell · 27/03/2026 14:31

I literally wouldn’t give a fuck and I’d hand it over the same way I would hand over a toaster. It’s 2026 and I’m not a prude.

ChangePrivacyQuestion · 27/03/2026 14:31

You just gave me a mental car crash... right. gloves on, tape up the packaging and I'm leaving it in their garden. Facing him knocking on my door is just too much!

Good for you. Want to come over and deal with it for me then?

This happened to my sister. Last time she spoke about it, she still had the parcel as she was too embarrassed to deal with it!

Well done OP, that's the best you can do in the circumstances I think. x

LeedsLoiner · 27/03/2026 14:40

Don't forget to leave them a pack of the appropriate batteries...

Hayley1256 · 27/03/2026 14:46

I would give it them and just say as you were opening you realised it wasn't yours. Leave it at that and let them wonder if you saw what was inside

You should treat it the same as you would if it was any other parcel.. bit unfair of you to leave it at risk of theft in their garden. You wouldn’t do that if it was an iPhone or pair of trainers. You accepted it in error which wasn’t really your fault, the delivery person is ultimately to blame but you should take care of it as you would any other parcel.
