Sad about my new job?

When I applied for this role I was told it was 2 days a week in the office - and it’s literally 0.

I know that’s most people’s dream but I live alone. To be in a house all day every single day I think is going to be so detrimental to my mental health. I don’t know what to do. It took me 3 months to find this role.

I totally get you, I left a WFH job as I'm better in an office environment.

Why can you not work in the office, is there no space? Can you share desk space with somebody? Can you rock up anyway and book a meeting room? Can you ask your manager for more office based meetings? Does your job require attending events and networking - maybe proactively book a few in so you have a reason to work outside of your home.

Have a think about what you can do to influence the situation.

Were you unemployed before? It's always better to look for work if you are in work.

Take the job and learn as much as you can from it. Let them know you are happy to switch to office-based work if thta becomes necessary.

Keep aplying for jobs that get you out into the world. You will find one eventually. Meanwhile you get some income and experience and an up to date CV.

Can you bring this up with your manager? You could talk about bedding in with your new team, if you don't want to mention mental health. Was it in writing in the job description or just communicated verbally?

Also, can you make plans to leave the house when you log off, every day? Look for what's going on in local community centres, join a fitness class, etc. Take advantage of being at home to arrange food prep so you don't need to do it directly before dinner, but can come home just to eat and go to bed. Slow cooker / batch and microwave, etc.

I get it. Similar thing has happened to me. Business wants us to work from home full time. I know so many people would be thrilled but I'd much rather work in the office with my team. All I can think of is to make more effort to be sociable when I'm not working.

You can socialise outside of work and, arguably, working from home allows you more time to do that. I work from the office at times and all I can do is commute there and back, eat, do chores and go to sleep. On my WFH day, I do little house jobs inbetween clients and ready to set off for a social activity as soon as I clock off. I have a dance class I am heading for in a minute. If I were in the office today, I'd be missing it because I wouldn't be back to the area after it had already started.

Why is the office days 0 - is it because noone else is in?

Could you book a day or two in a desk sharing space? just for the company?
