chucking litter out of cars

GenieGenealogy · 26/03/2026 10:01

Why do people think it's OK to throw litter out of cars? You see it at every junction off a motorway and on streets leading out of town, people lobbing fast food packaging, cans and other shite out of their vehicle. It just looks awful.

Who is doing this and why??

We used to live at the exact point where people finished eating their MacDonalds meals. There were drifts of litter in the hedge. I don’t know why it isn’t possible in such cases to compel MacDonalds to litter pick.

BetterOffNow · 26/03/2026 10:04

We were talking about this the other day - how do these people think that it's OK not to just take their rubbish home when they can see the impact of what they're doing so clearly? The verges next to the motorways look disgusting near where I live, and it puts people's lives at risk to clear it. Awful behaviour IMO

angelos02 · 26/03/2026 10:19

No idea - it is disgusting. It's idiotic enough when people do it when out and about walking but if you're in a car, just take it home. God knows what kind of areas these people live in.

Chattanoogachoo · 26/03/2026 10:31

I watch the staff litter pick in the car park of my local McDonald's where people can't even walk to the nearby bins so they're obviously not going to care about littering the countryside.
I maintain a roadside area of about quarter of a mile through the live here love here initiative. The main litter is coffee cups and lids, drinks tins and bottles.
I just don't get the thought process of these people, they know they're throwing rubbish out just a few feet from sheep, cows and horses.

Womanofcustard · 26/03/2026 10:35

I thought McDonald’s were doing a trial where all takeaway packaging was given a unique number so it could be traced and the offenders fined?

Which is great - but would depend on people litter picking and tracing the person involved.

I was recently in the US and travelled quite a bit around the state I was in. Litter was noticeable by its absence. No cans and sweet wrappers at motorway junctions. No chewing gum on the pavements. No plastic bags on verges. And this was a state which does not restrict free plastic supermarket bags and loves its fast food.

Coming back home, landing at the airport and driving out to find litter everywhere is just depressing.

Litterpickers have been asking for the car registration plates to be printed on the food bag and receipt. No luck so far sadly.

LittleCrumblyBiscuit · 26/03/2026 12:30

They do it because they are scummy inconsiderate dirty little twats. No other reason.

GenieGenealogy · 26/03/2026 12:57

But does the UK have a higher proportion of scummy twats than other countries, or are other countries just better at policing them, or collecting the litter?

I once gave my daughter and her friend a lift to the gym. She was showing off and threw a crisp packet out of the car window
So I stopped the car and made her do the walk of shame to go back and pick it up...
Can't bear littering..there is absolutely no excuse for it. Just take your crap home!

ChamonixMountainBum · 26/03/2026 13:10

I remember sitting at an outside table at a cafe enjoying a coffee when a car pulled up to the pavement opposite. The family of four inside then proceeded to open up the big bag of McDonalds they had just collected and to my astonishment just started to casually chuck the wrappers out the windows, by the time they were done there were four piles of litter below each of the windows. I decided to say something and the confused looks i got back when I suggested using the bin nearby or taking their rubbish home was from a group of people who clearly did not know any better. I am not sure how you reach adulthood and not know this.

redboxer321 · 26/03/2026 13:13

I love it! I found a cheese sandwich the other day. It was in a Lidl bag and wrapped in foil. I guess somebody had made it for someone who didn't want it and they lobbed it out the window. I received it with much gratitude! Sadly, I only got one sandwich as my owner, as she likes to call herself, swiped the bag with the rest of the treasures. That was a good find. Not my best though. I once found a McDonalds bag. Inside was a perfectly wrapped egg sausage Mcmuffin. I managed to eat the sausage before said owner took away the rest. I had the best bit though. My owner calls them filthy fuckers but not me, I'm all in favour of it!

Good for you.
I went out to talk to a friend I hadn't seen for a long time. She'd been visiting her mum who lives 3 doors away. As I was chatting to her, she started emptying the contents of her car onto the pavement. I was at first speechless, then casually I began putting the rubbish back into her car.
I've just realised I haven't seen her for a while 🤣

Ban drive thru's & takeaway

Lauren1983 · 26/03/2026 13:25

My car is very expensive and I don't want it to smell bad

I am keeping paid litter pickers in work

Birds and wildlife will eat it anyway

It will rot away eventually

Other people do it so I might as well join in

I think that pretty much covers all the excuses these people come up with. Of course none of these reasons are based in any sense but the people who do this have no sense and there is no justifiable reason to litter anywhere. You just have to accept there are a lot of selfish people who live in their own tiny bubble and they don't give any thought to anyone but themselves.

JohnofWessex · 26/03/2026 13:39

Apart from anything else its obviously wrong and dangerous to other road users.

I would suggest mandatory disqualification

If you are in charge of a boat or aircraft you are expected to keep the passengers in order and a car should be no different.

I would also suggest that using a car to commit an offence eg carrying drugs/weapons, fly tipping etc should also attract a ban
